Background / History

The Hyuga have been an integral part of Konoha since the village's founding. Their Byakugan and large number of capable shinobi made them a major clan whose cooperation had to be negotiated with the Main Family, even for Hokage assignments. This centralized loyalty led Hiruzen Sarutobi to view the clan as resembling a “state within a state.” 4 85

During the Third Shinobi World War, Kirigakure obtained a Hyuga Byakugan. Hizashi Hyuga led an elite recovery unit against the thief, Ao, but the mission failed despite inflicting significant losses on Mist forces. 5 The stolen eye remained a central clan concern until Shinichi Hyuga later led a successful operation against Ao and recovered it. 104 114

The clan provided eight elite shinobi, led by Hizashi, to guard Kushina Uzumaki during Naruto's birth. Hizashi's use of Eight Trigrams Palm: Kaiten against Obito's Kamui helped defend Kushina during the Nine-Tails attack. 5 35

Following Kumogakure's infiltration of the compound and attempted seizure of Hyuga members, the clan refused demands to surrender anyone as compensation. Shin Hyuga publicly defended the clan's historical service to Konoha and its right to protect its own members, while Minato Namikaze ultimately supported the Hyuga position. 81 84 85

To restore its standing amid the Cloud conflict, the Hyuga committed most of its elite personnel to the front under Shin Hyuga, leaving Shinichi in charge of the weakened compound with Hizashi assigned to assist him. 88 The clan later endured arson, an assassination plot targeting Shinichi, and pressure from Root while its principal fighters were away. 89 91 94

By the time of Shinichi's rise, Hyuga personnel served throughout Konoha's institutions, including the Anbu, Reconnaissance Unit, Barrier Squad, Interrogation Squad, Jonin Squad, and Ninja Academy. Hiashi became head of Konoha's Defense Reconnaissance Unit. 169

The clan is divided between the hereditary Main Family and Branch Family. The Main Family controls Branch Family shinobi through the Caged Bird Seal, but both sides remain mutually dependent: the Main Family requires the Branch Family's cooperation, while the Branch Family remains bound to the Main Family's authority. 3 4

Clan members are forbidden from marrying without reporting it first, and anyone entering a marital relationship with the clan is placed under close surveillance. These restrictions are intended to prevent the Byakugan from leaving the clan. 181
