Background / History
Childhood friendship with Andy
Ron grew up near Andy Collins: the Weasley and Collins homes were separated by four mountains. They met after Andy began visiting neighboring families on a child-sized flying broom. Before Hogwarts, Andy was Ron’s only wizard friend of the same age 3.
Their interests differed from the outset. Andy wanted to discuss magical knowledge, while Ron preferred Quidditch and fanciful boasts. Ron nevertheless visited frequently, teased Andy about his reading habits, and challenged him to Quidditch after learning new tricks from Charlie. Andy won their match, noticing that Ron quickly lost confidence once he fell behind 3 4.
First year at Hogwarts
At Hogwarts, Ron gravitated toward Harry Potter, whose interests suited him better than Andy’s intensive magical studies. Andy increasingly kept his distance, regarding Ron and Harry’s adventures as unnecessary trouble 20 81.
During Halloween, Pansy Parkinson accused Harry and Ron of attacking Draco Malfoy. Dumbledore ordered an investigation rather than accepting the accusation immediately. Subsequent rumors that the pair had used Dark Arts against Malfoy intensified hostility between Gryffindor and Slytherin 51 57.
The friendship with Andy fractured over the Philosopher’s Stone. Ron proposed removing the Stone, then joined Harry in seeking Andy’s help after Dumbledore left Hogwarts. Andy and Hermione refused to intervene, producing an open falling-out 96.
Second year and the Horcrux crisis
Andy visited The Burrow during the summer, where Ron and Harry were staying together. Ron invited him to remain for lunch and afternoon Quidditch, but Andy declined. Their cordial reunion did not resolve their lack of shared interests 147.
Ron drove the enchanted Weasley car to school without permission and received a Howler from Molly in the Great Hall. Her public reprimand emphasized both his parents’ distress and the possible consequences for Arthur’s Ministry job. Malfoy later mocked the family’s finances and Arthur’s position; Ron’s angry attempt to cast “Eat Slugs” struck himself instead 158 195.
During the later attacks at Hogwarts, Ron displayed suspicious behavior. Andy concluded that he was not the culprit, but was being used to distract him and influence Harry’s judgment. After recovering, Ron recalled receiving commands three or four times 264 266 267.
Andy subsequently discovered Ron under outside control again and questioned him with Veritaserum about his nighttime movements. The crisis culminated in Voldemort inhabiting Ron, while Andy held him at wandpoint and asked Harry to search for Dark Arts items. Dumbledore later identified Percy Weasley as another person involved in the affair 274 275 279 280.
Later school life
Ron continued helping Harry examine suspicious events, including Malfoy’s conversations with Andy and the circumstances surrounding Peter Pettigrew’s rescue. He also noticed changes in Snape’s treatment of them and overheard Slytherins discussing Andy 424 453 456.
His later interactions with Andy remained familiar despite their earlier estrangement. Ron admired Andy’s flying spell, questioned his apparent resistance to Veela enchantment, and shared Harry’s awkwardness when seated with Andy and Hermione as they openly behaved like a couple 561 626 652.
Personality
Ron is sociable, playful, and more enthusiastic about games than formal magical study. Before entering Hogwarts, he had neither practiced spells nor opened his textbooks. When Andy demonstrated his summer spellcasting, Ron privately felt relieved that he was not similarly expected to spend the holiday practicing magic 3 11 147.
His desire for recognition is accompanied by insecurity. He wants others to appreciate his Quidditch skills, but setbacks can rapidly undermine his confidence. Insults about his family’s poverty and his father’s employment provoke strong anger, sometimes leading him to act impulsively 4 195.
Much of Ron’s characterization is filtered through Andy’s adult-minded perspective. Andy considers him academically disengaged and difficult to relate to, yet also remembers examples of courage that contradict his unimpressive early spellcasting 3 31.
