Reputation and theories

Yu Xiaogang promoted himself as the continent's foremost Martial Soul theorist and credited himself with the “Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul.” His theories included the claimed 423-year limit for a first Soul Ring, which Bibi Dong dismisses when it is brought up in front of her. Ye Kai later accuses him of merely taking information from Spirit Hall's library and claiming it as his own. 3 64

Despite being over fifty, Yu Xiaogang remained at level 29. He nevertheless sought talented disciples to validate his theories and restore his standing. 60

Taking Tang San as a disciple

At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang intervenes after Tang San is thrown aside by the gatekeeper. Tang Hao's letter, Tang San's innate full Soul Power, and his Twin Martial Souls convince Yu Xiaogang to accept him as a disciple. 59

Privately, Yu Xiaogang sees Tang San as both a path to proving his theories and a means to retaliate against Bibi Dong for the humiliation he believes she caused him. He reassures Tang San that Tang Hao is alive and promises to train him until he is strong enough to learn the truth about his father. 59

Conflict with Ye Kai

Yu Xiaogang also attempts to recruit Ye Kai after noticing that he cannot sense the boy's Soul Power. Ye Kai refuses, mocks Yu Xiaogang's level 29 cultivation, and kicks him when Yu Xiaogang grabs his shoulder. 60

After Xiao Wu badly injures Tang San, Yu Xiaogang pressures Nuoding Academy's principal to summon Ye Kai as her guardian. He challenges Ye Kai to a spirit duel, demanding that Ye Kai apologize to Tang San and become his disciple if defeated. 62

Yu Xiaogang loses decisively. Ye Kai defeats him without using his Martial Soul or Soul Skills, leaves him injured in a crater, and reveals a purple-black First Soul Ring—directly undermining Yu Xiaogang's Soul Ring-limit theory. Ye Kai then relays Bibi Dong's message that Yu Xiaogang is “trash.” 63 64

Later mentorship and decline

Three years after taking Tang San in, Yu Xiaogang remains Tang San's principal mentor but cannot explain why Tang San's cultivation slows after reaching level 20. He later gives Tang San a partial account of Tang Hao's history, urging him to cultivate for revenge against Spirit Hall and the Clear Sky Sect. 101 102

While working with Shrek Academy and Heaven Dou Royal Academy's Second Team, he becomes increasingly fixated on Tang San's results. Yu Xiaogang escorts Tang San to meet Tang Xiao and the Clear Sky Sect elders, believing they may help with Tang San's problems. He is devastated when the Seventh Elder reveals that Tang Hao is dead, refusing to accept that his idol could have been killed. 198 199

After Spirit Hall's campaign against the Clear Sky Sect, Yu Xiaogang seeks refuge with Tang San at the Strength Clan. He still expects the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan to save him and attempts to flee when no help arrives. 234 251

Bibi Dong intercepts the pair herself. Before Yu Xiaogang can speak to her or ask for help, she pierces him through the body with her spider legs and kills him. 251
