Background / History
Gon was born to Ging Freecss, who named him “Gon Freecss” and later entrusted him to Aunt Mito while resuming his life as a wandering Hunter. Ging had already begun preparing a long-term path for his son: the Hunter Exam, Nen training, Greed Island, and eventual guidance from Kite. 57 69 427 429
Morin knew Ging during Gon's infancy and gave Gon the Monster Hat, a gadget Gon continued wearing without understanding its function. Morin later confirmed that he had held Gon as a baby. 176 244
At age twelve, Gon leaves Whale Island to become a Hunter after learning that Ging is alive. Before departing, he encounters Kite, who rescues him from a Fox Bear, tells him about Ging, and becomes his first direct guide into the Hunter world. 171 173
Appearance
Gon is a spiky-haired boy whose most recognizable feature is the black-and-red Monster Hat he has worn since childhood. He carries a fishing rod associated with Ging and develops a notably trained physique over the course of his journey. 177 238 239 422
- Spiky hair. 292
- Black-and-red hat later identified as Morin’s gadget. 239 244
- Fishing rod inherited from his father; Gon refuses Morin’s offer to exchange it for a better one. 177
- Physically well-trained, with muscles compared favorably to Ging’s at the same age. 422
Personality
Gon is sunny, open, and intensely curious. He speaks candidly to strangers, asks persistent questions, and approaches dangerous situations with an optimism that can seem out of place among Hunter candidates. 177 178 217
His greatest trait is stubborn determination. He insists on pursuing Hisoka alone during the Hunter Exam, rejects Morin’s offer to reveal Ging’s location in exchange for surrendering, and refuses to yield even under Hanzo’s torture. 220 231 233
Gon’s moral judgment is personal rather than conventional. He is deeply concerned with whether a victim is innocent, respects life strongly because of his upbringing in nature, and is willing to cooperate with or learn from dangerous people when he believes there is a reason to do so. 321 402
Abilities & Skills
Nen
Gon is an Enhancer whose combat style emphasizes direct physical force, resilience, and rapid growth through battle. 292
- Opened his Aura Nodes at Heavens Arena. 235
- Learned Gyo, though his early combat experience remains limited. 239
- Trains under Biscuit alongside Killua after realizing he must improve to reach his goals. 320 343
Jajanken
Gon’s signature Nen technique is a charged “Rock, Paper, Scissors” attack, with Rock functioning as a concentrated Nen punch. 357
- Uses a charging motion and chant as prerequisites that increase the force of the attack. 357
- Can break through metal walls with Rock. 357
- Gains greatly increased range when using the Monster Hat’s elasticity. 357
- Requires time to charge, leaving him vulnerable if an opponent interrupts or controls him. 357
Monster Hat
The Monster Hat is a gadget Morin gave Gon during infancy. It remained dormant until Gon’s Aura effectively “charged” it after he awakened Nen. 176 239 240 244
- Stretches Gon's neck, limbs, and body with rubber-like elasticity. 239 357
- Greatly reduces the impact of blunt-force attacks. 240
- Extends the range of Gon's punches and improves his mobility in combat. 357
- Does not make Gon strong enough to defeat an opponent such as Hisoka on its own. 240
Wilderness Survival
Gon’s childhood on Whale Island gives him strong instincts in nature.
- Detects an approaching storm from the humid air and the behavior of seabirds. 177
- Forms an unusual bond with the Fox Bear cub Kuma Jetta, whom he chooses to raise despite being warned that Fox Bears cannot be tamed. 171
- Displays heightened tracking ability, including an unusually sensitive sense of smell. 239
Equipment / Items
- Fishing Rod — A memento of Ging; Gon refuses to trade it away despite Morin offering a better rod. 177

- Guiding Angel — A gadget temporarily lent by Morin during the Hunter Exam to determine the correct route to the test site. 180
- Greed Island console — Purchased by Gon for thirty-six billion Jewel so that he could enter Ging’s game on his own terms. 295 296
- Accompany card — Used after clearing Greed Island; instead of taking him directly to Ging, it transports Gon and Killua to Kite. 348

- Morin — Ging’s old friend and the giver of Gon's Monster Hat. Gon initially views him as an approachable friend, then becomes awed by Morin’s standing as the Phantom Troupe’s Vice-Leader and one of the World’s Five Greatest Nen Users. 176 223 244
- Hisoka — Rival who recognizes Gon's potential. Gon steals Hisoka’s number tag during the Hunter Exam and later loses to him at Heavens Arena. 225 238 240

- Kuma Jetta — Fox Bear cub adopted by Gon. Their bond turns the normally violent creature into a companion with unusually human-like gentleness. 171

Hunter Exam
Gon boards the Sea God to take the Hunter Exam, meeting Leorio, Kurapika, Killua, and Morin along the way. He insists on hunting Hisoka’s number tag by himself, successfully takes it through deception, then loses both tags to Gretta before refusing Hisoka’s offer to return them. 177 220 225
During the final examination, Morin offers information about Ging in exchange for Gon's surrender. Gon and Killua open their Aura Nodes and begin formal Nen training. Gon eventually challenges Hisoka, but Hisoka overwhelms him with Stretchable Love. The battle triggers the Monster Hat for the first time, revealing its elastic defensive ability. 235 238 240
Greed Island
Driven by his search for Ging, Gon purchases Greed Island and enters the game with Killua, Phinks, and Feitan. He trains under Biscuit, participates in the dodgeball match against Razor, and resolves to become stronger after feeling he did not contribute enough to the victory. 295 320 340 343

Chairman Election and Reunion

After the election, Gon finally meets Ging at the World Tree and expresses his desire to eventually travel to the Dark Continent. 436
Toy Man Goal
Before Gon can accompany Ging toward the Dark Continent, Morin forces him to confront the gap in his strength by assigning him the task of defeating the Toy Man and the Fall Expert. Gon accepts this as his next objective. 437
