Background / History
Hermione learns that she is a witch after receiving her Hogwarts letter. Professor McGonagall personally demonstrates magic to convince the Granger family, who had assumed the letter was a prank. Hermione quickly embraces the wizarding world, carries her new wand with excitement, and develops a strong longing to attend Hogwarts. 2 12
Before starting school, she encounters Black during a dessert-shop dispute. Believing that he is mocking her prominent front teeth, she reacts with intense anger. Soon afterward, Black rescues her from a Concealment Monster in the Forbidden Forest; although terrified and inexperienced, Hermione raises her wand and places herself between him and the creature. She later explains the wizarding world to Black and writes Professor McGonagall a detailed account of his extraordinary Transfiguration. 2 8 11 22
At Hogwarts, Hermione establishes herself as a high-achieving Gryffindor. She succeeds in Transfiguration by turning a match into a perfect steel needle and repeatedly earns points through textbook-perfect answers. Her competitive habits, tendency to lecture others, and pride initially leave her isolated from classmates. 89 95 189 233
Black confronts Hermione with the realization that many of the traits she despises in Cassandra—talent, pride, competitiveness, and disregard for others' feelings—also describe herself. Hermione accepts this criticism, resolves to seek friends rather than opponents, and gradually becomes less rigid about rules and more open toward others. 95 96 237
During her later studies, Hermione overextends herself by taking every elective and secretly using a Time-Turner to attend overlapping classes. Exhaustion and study potions become routine until Black gives her the Soul Lantern, allowing her to master a term's Transfiguration material in roughly two hours. She subsequently decides to prioritize genuine learning over collecting grades, drop several electives, and pursue early examinations instead. 734 746 751 757 762 763
Appearance
Hermione is described as a young girl with large front teeth, a feature she is especially sensitive about before they are later reduced in size. 2 21 237
- Large front teeth prior to their reduction. 2 21 237
- Has a habit of tucking her Time-Turner beneath her clothing. 734
- Wears a white dress when Black visits the Granger home during the holidays. 630
Personality
Hermione is intensely curious, academically driven, and proud of her knowledge. Before Hogwarts, she has memorized her schoolbooks; at school, she answers questions eagerly and becomes frustrated when Black supplements her textbook-based answers with information she does not know. 8 97
Her competitiveness is especially pronounced around Cassandra and Black. She can be jealous, defensive, and easily provoked when she believes she is being excluded or surpassed. However, she is capable of self-reflection: after recognizing how her conduct affects others, she attempts to change and values friendship more consciously. 95 96 236 445
Despite fear and limited practical experience, Hermione consistently demonstrates courage. She confronts the Concealment Monster with her wand, joins dangerous excursions to support her friends, and refuses to abandon Black even after learning that association with him may endanger her. 8 142 252 666
