The Appearance of an Ancient God

The enormous wolf-headed, sheep-bodied monster let out a mournful cry and collapsed, crawling sorrowfully toward the stark-white skull before the pedestal.
"Sorry, Archbishop. I'm useless..."
Saintess Amelia gathered Bishop Laurence's remains into her arms, clutching them tightly to her chest as a dazed, sorrowful smile escaped her lips.
"Does this mean... you forgive me?"
"Lord Laurence, don't go too far. Wait for me..."
As though it possessed a will of its own, the skull faintly warmed in a final response. Only then did the obsession flickering in her eyes gradually fade.
Immediately afterward, her twisted beastly body turned into white mist beneath the wash of unleashed blood-energy and crumbled away.
At that moment, the King of Angels, who had watched the two complete their final journey, seemed to make some sort of decision. Raising a hand, he curled his fingers and caught two wisps of light from the blood mist, murmuring softly.
"Your journey as humans has ended. Rest well..."
"When you awaken, the night will have passed. You will be reborn as angels and fight for me!"
Maria stared blankly at the pair who had died in each other's embrace. Only after Kevin called to her several times did the female hunter, who had seemed distracted all along the way, snap back to herself.
"Amelia could have chosen to live. Why did she?"
"Because her heart was entirely bound to Laurence. People sometimes do many foolish things because of their emotions."
"What do we do next?"
"The Celestial Clock Tower and Byrgenwerth Academy. That should be our final stop..."
Kevin smiled freely, took Maria's delicate hand, and left the Grand Cathedral, heading toward their destination.
Most of Yharnam's citizens had already evacuated.
Those stubborn fools unwilling to risk going outside had sealed
