In fact, becoming the villain the superheroes crusaded against, like he was now, was also an option.
But simply being the superheroes' villain was somewhat one-sided, offering too narrow a view and understanding.
A mere villain had no value. He was only a small segment of a story, gone once it ended.
What He-El wanted was to be someone who ran through the superheroes' entire lives. In the future, when those aged superheroes sat in their homes and listened to their grandchildren and descendants ask what sort of person the Emperor of New Krypton had been, they would helplessly reveal complicated expressions and speak of their complex emotions of love and hatred toward him.
For an example, it would be somewhat like Superman and Luthor, only far more intense.
He-El needed to obtain from superheroes—spiritually and sensorially—the way the logic governing the universe operated.
The unique logic governing the universe in this Source Universe destined He-El to become someone who toyed with countless superheroes, making them display a complex side toward him.
Therefore, the more superheroes were associated and connected with him, the better.
Of course, He-El would not indulge them either. He was busy himself and could only come "visit" them from time to time, but he would not spare these superheroes any suffering they deserved before him.
