In eastern Kingdom of Ukraine lay a small town called Dovzhansk. Although it stood on the border between the Kingdom of Ukraine and Buru, it was quite prosperous. When Russia ruled Ukraine, Ukrainians lived in extreme poverty. Many could not even fill their stomachs, and famines occurred frequently. Ukraine was, after all, one of Russia's most important granaries. Every year, Ukrainians supplied the Russian government with vast amounts of grain, yet in the end, they could not even feed themselves. When natural disasters struck, people starved to death in even greater numbers.
It could be said that Ukrainians had always been deeply dissatisfied with the oppression of the Russians. As Russia's second-largest ethnic group, Ukrainians not only enjoyed little power, but instead remained under oppression.
However, ever since the Kingdom of Ukraine was founded and German Emperor Wilhelm III also became King of Ukraine, the lives of Ukrainians had undergone earth-shaking changes. Germany also needed Ukraine's grain and other resources, but it did not simply plunder them; it bought them at market prices. This allowed Ukrainians to earn substantial profits by growing grain. Coupled with Germany's relatively low taxes, the lives of Ukrainians steadily improved.
Ukrainians were extremely satisfied with their current lives. They were even profoundly grateful to German Emperor Wilhelm III. If war broke out between Germany and Buru, nearly all Ukrainians would stand on Germany's side and help Germany defeat Buru. They knew that if Germany were defeated, they would once again return to slavery under the Russians. They never wanted to live that kind of life again.
The Kingdom of Ukraine was not inhabited entirely by Ukrainians. There were also quite a few Russians in eastern Kingdom of Ukraine. However, these Russians were now enjoying prosperous lives as well, which made them utterly unwilling to return
