| Research into an improved Impure World Reincarnation | 666 667 | Receives research originating from another version of himself through the scroll Asuka obtained during his journey into the future. The supplied version still produces dead shinobi substantially weaker than their living peaks. |
| Further-refined Impure World Reincarnation | 692 697 | Improves the supplied technique and uses specially made bodies to bring three Mangekyō-wielding Uchiha closer to their former strength. Chakra limitations prevent him from stripping every reincarnated shinobi of consciousness. |
| Temporary White Zetsu combat clone | 711 | Modifies a White Zetsu body to participate in the war while his main body remains elsewhere controlling the reincarnated army. The clone has less strength and chakra than his real body 720. |
Background / History
Orochimaru trained under Sarutobi Hiruzen alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. He and Tsunade were trusted comrades who repeatedly supported one another while fighting Hanzo. According to Tsunade, Nawaki’s death prompted Orochimaru to dwell on life’s uncertainty and begin researching forbidden techniques; Dan’s death made him still more withdrawn 113 117.
He sought to learn every technique in the world. Although he did not particularly care about becoming Hokage, he cared about why Hiruzen chose Minato instead of him as the Fourth Hokage. Tsunade was sufficiently concerned about his reaction to contact him afterward 113.
As a Konoha researcher and higher-up, Orochimaru gained access to the village’s concealed projects. Danzo financed his experiments and supplied people captured outside the village. Orochimaru also abducted fellow villagers without informing Danzo, creating the scandal that led to his expulsion 110 238 720.
After leaving Konoha, he continued intermittent collaboration with Danzo, including private research. Those contacts diminished after Hashirama’s resurrection and Tsunade’s return as acting Hokage, but never completely ceased 719.
Appearance
- Hair: Waist-length black hair 92.
- Eyes: Golden, snake-like vertical pupils 92 697.
- Skin: Pale 92 697.
- Facial markings: Purple eyeshadow extending toward the sides of his nose 697.
- Accessories: Blue-green, magatama-shaped earrings 92.
- Disguises: Appears as a woman during the Chunin Exams and later impersonates the Fourth Kazekage using the victim’s skin 562 565 586.
Personality
Orochimaru treats knowledge, power, and continued existence as priorities that outweigh ordinary moral restraints. When surrounded by Konoha shinobi, he remains composed and openly defends human experimentation by invoking the Second Hokage’s forbidden techniques. His pursuit of immortality eventually makes him willing to support a war threatening the entire ninja world 111 756.
He is calculating but intensely curious. He studies opponents during combat, quickly recognizes unfamiliar techniques, and reassesses possible research subjects according to their abilities. His interest in Sasuke shifts toward Asuka once he discovers an adult Uchiha with exceptionally powerful eyes 564 566.
Other people’s condemnation rarely troubles him, but Hiruzen’s judgment retains emotional importance. Before the war, he wanted to prove his teacher wrong; even the idealized vision created by Tsukuyomi includes Hiruzen’s approval. Orochimaru recognizes the illusion immediately, yet calls that approval so false that it makes him want to cry 717 720 757.
His ruthlessness coexists with qualities acknowledged by others. Asuka credits him with generosity and reliably delivering what he promises. Anko remembers an earlier teacher who was gentle toward her despite his cold outward expression 365 562.

- Exploits Sasuke’s resentment toward Itachi to provoke a stronger response and test his potential 563.
- Recognizes the resemblance between Asuka’s chakra-enhanced punches and Tsunade’s techniques, while identifying differences in their execution 566.
- Recognizes Asuka’s space-time movement during battle 566.
- His temporary White Zetsu clone has limited chakra and inferior physical strength; summoning and defensive techniques rapidly exhaust it 720.
- Desires Ryūchi Cave’s Sage Mode, but the supplied context does not establish that he has mastered it 720.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — Uses a sword identified by this name during the Death Forest battle. Later claims that Asuka’s system-rewarded Kusanagi is his lost weapon because its identifying mark matches his own 568 719 720.
- Research records — Leaves extensive documents in Konoha when fleeing; Danzo subsequently presents them publicly 365.
- Face Copying Technique materials — Uses the actual skin of the murdered Fourth Kazekage to reproduce his appearance 586.
- Secret laboratories — Conducts research in concealed facilities, including a laboratory in the Rain Country’s sewers 666.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Exposure and Departure from Konoha
Asuka suspects Orochimaru’s involvement in disappearances inside Konoha. Orochimaru later attempts to assassinate him in the Uchiha clan grounds, with Shukaku’s intervention preventing an easy kill. Afterward, Asuka recognizes that Orochimaru still holds the advantage in a lethal fight and seeks advice on killing him 78 92 93 565.
Madara and Spiral Zetsu arrange his exposure through denunciation letters. Danzo later recalls approximately five thousand letters with differing handwriting and unusually clear photographs of the experiments 96 110 496.
When Konoha shinobi surround his hideout, Orochimaru admits his experiments and refuses to submit. He fights Hiruzen and Tsunade, summons Manda, and escapes after Danzo intervenes. Konoha subsequently orders his capture or death and classifies him as a rogue ninja 111 112 117.
Recruitment into Akatsuki
While recovering from his injuries, Orochimaru considers controlling a country to finance further experiments. Konan and Pakura locate him, and Konan expends a hundred thousand Exploding Tags during their confrontation. Their financial resources make the organization attractive despite his initial refusal 121 122.
He leaves with them, but the pursuit continues in the Rain Country. After Asuka severely injures Manda, Orochimaru intervenes and survives their ensuing battle through substitutions and escape techniques. Asuka eventually stops pursuing him because his chakra is exhausted, while Jiraiya takes over the chase 126 127.
Future Chunin Exams and Konoha Crush
During Asuka’s journey into the future, Orochimaru infiltrates the Chunin Exams disguised as a woman. He attacks Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke, focusing on Sasuke’s suitability as an Uchiha vessel. Asuka intervenes, prompting Orochimaru to consider him an even more valuable target 562 563 565 566 667.
Asuka overwhelms several of his defenses and cuts him in half, but Orochimaru survives. Jiraiya arrives during the confrontation, and Asuka’s later examination of the apparent corpse confirms that killing him was not straightforward 568 569.
In this future setting, Orochimaru establishes Otogakure by bribing the Rice Field Country’s daimyo and obtaining Konoha’s support through Danzo. He later murders the Fourth Kazekage, impersonates him, and launches the invasion of Konoha. His confrontation with Hiruzen includes accusations that his teacher failed to protect the village or settle the Hokage succession 573 586 593.
Kabuto obtains Asuka’s promise not to interfere with the destruction plan in exchange for a reincarnation scroll. Asuka later passes that research toward Orochimaru for further development 667.
Fourth Shinobi World War
Orochimaru refines Impure World Reincarnation and opens the war with three powerful reincarnated Uchiha. He remains in a secure location controlling the dead while sending a temporary White Zetsu clone to the battlefield, partly to draw Hiruzen into witnessing his accomplishments 692 697 711.
His desecration of graves and use of dead relatives make him a particularly hated enemy among the Allied Forces. He ignores their curses and summons Manda, who is opposed by Asuka’s sage-level serpent Ichikishimahime 716 717.
Asuka and Shukaku repeatedly damage the combat clone, but Orochimaru continues escaping through substitutions and serpentine bodies. Asuka finally defeats it with Tsukuyomi; the remains revert to a White Zetsu corpse, leaving Orochimaru’s main body elsewhere 720.
Final Confrontation with Hiruzen and Danzo
Danzo uses surviving surveillance measures to locate Orochimaru’s main body. He and Hiruzen enter the cave intending to stop the reincarnated army 743 756.
Orochimaru explains his pursuit of immortality through the Otsutsuki and admits that he does not agree with Madara’s plan. He also acknowledges that research alone cannot match the united Allied Forces or the exceptional power of certain shinobi 756 757.
Hiruzen and Danzo fight him, and Orochimaru counters with reincarnated Kage. Impure World Reincarnation is eventually released, returning the dead to rest; the following chapter identifies Orochimaru as defeated and captured 757 762 763.
