The village chief and foster father was the middle-aged man in a sheepskin robe who brought meat or fruit every day.
What did he want with me? He wasn't here to make me settle the food bill for the past few days, was he?!
At that thought, a trace of bitterness appeared on Xian's face. He was genuinely broke right now. If the man really did that, he would probably have to work as a laborer to pay off the debt.
"Prince Mingyu, if you do not wish to receive him, I can turn him away for you."
Seeing that Xian had not responded for a long while, Anlìyà outside the door assumed he was refusing and spoke again.
"Please let him in."
After thinking it over, Xian agreed.
If he wanted to establish himself in this world, he could not keep hiding in a tiny wooden cabin forever. He needed to meet more people.
And the village chief was undoubtedly an excellent person to approach. He should be able to obtain quite a bit of information from him.
"Noble Prince, this humble one and my beautiful daughter greet you. May the gods bless you!"
As soon as he entered and set down the basket brimming with fruit, Robert grabbed Anlìyà and tried to kneel on both knees in salute. Fortunately, Xian stopped them in time.
"Sit," Xian gestured.
"Your Highness, you are too gracious!"
Robert chuckled awkwardly as he rubbed his hands together, yet he did not dare sit in the chair. He merely stood there stiffly.
Xian felt rather helpless. This wooden cabin was supposed to be his house.
In that case, he could only stand as well.
"Village Chief, may I ask what brings you here?" Xian asked directly.
"Your Highness, I heard from my daughter that you have learned the language. I came especially to congratulate you on your extraordinary talent for learning, and also to ask whether there is anything you need."
"For example, is your residence too humble? Do you require more meat in your meals? Are you satisfied with the fruit we have brought?"
Robert asked with a smile plastered across his face.
This was somewhat beyond Xian's expectations. He had thought the man would first ask which country he came from and why he could not even understand the language.
Now it seemed that this village chief had no intention of investigating his origins. He only wanted to curry favor with him.
"I do not need anything. But if I had to name one thing, I would like to meet the person who saved me."
Xian thought for a moment before answering.
He had been deeply impressed by the fierce man who had shot the leaping alpha wolf in the eye with a single arrow. Besides, the man had saved his life. No matter what, even by the most basic standards of morality, he ought to express his gratitude.
"By the Sun God, the person Your Highness speaks of must be Little Berg. He is the most talented young man in our village. Without anyone to teach him, he became a Hunter through his own efforts. Unlike the other young people, who can only remain serfs like us."
"You may not know this, but all the game delivered to you these past few days was entrusted to me by him. He is truly a warmhearted and polite young man!"
"If he had not always regarded Anlìyà as his older sister since childhood, I really would have..."
Robert spoke on and on until Anlìyà could no longer endure it and kicked him in the heel from behind. Only then did he realize he had lost his composure.
"Your Highness, I have made a fool of myself. Small people like us truly have no manners." Robert scratched his head awkwardly.
"I will go fetch Little Berg right away."
With that, perhaps to ease the awkwardness, Robert hurried off, completely ignoring Anlìyà's anxious meaningful look beside him.
"Miss Anlìyà, is there something you wish to say to me?"
Xian noticed the hesitant expression on the pretty face of the blonde girl beside him.
After thinking for a moment, Anlìyà still shook her head.
She knew her foster father must have noticed her look. Since he had not responded, it meant that now was not the time to bring up "that matter."
Not long afterward, Robert returned to the wooden cabin with a lean, stern-looking youth carrying a quiver and bow.
Above the youth's head were two lines of white text: one read Commoner, and the other Hunter.
Commoner was a Status Blessing, while Hunter was a Profession Blessing. Unlike Status Blessings, which were decided at birth, Profession Blessings were acquired through later accumulation and likewise granted their owners various abilities.
For example, the Profession Blessing of most people in the village was Farmer, which allowed the crops they planted to yield a little more.
"Your Highness, this is Little Berg."
Robert introduced him respectfully, then signaled for him to bow.
Berg immediately moved to bend down and kneel, but Xian stopped him in time.
"You saved my life. There is no reason in this world for a lifesaver to kneel before the person he saved," Xian said quickly.
"Respected Prince, you overpraise me. Being able to save noble you from the pack of wolves was not a favor I bestowed upon you, but my honor."
Berg spoke calmly.
This was not something he had improvised on the spot. Over the past few days, he had already spent sleepless nights drafting the words in his mind.
After all, saving the heir of a super kingdom who had fallen into hardship was undoubtedly the most crucial and irreplaceable precious opportunity of his life.
"Is there anything I can do for you?"
After hesitating for a moment, Xian still asked uncertainly.
Repaying kindness was his principle.
Although Xian knew that he had nothing upon first arriving in this foreign world and had very little he could offer in return, the moral values shaped by twenty years of society still compelled him to say it.
"Helping you is my honor. How could I possibly make a request?" Berg replied without hesitation.
"But..." the youth shifted his tone.
"I do indeed have one request that I hope your kindness will grant." A clear trace of hope flashed across his slightly weathered face.
Xian's expression tightened at those words, because even if Berg asked for only a small amount of money, Xian, whose pockets were completely empty, would be unable to provide it.
If it came down to it, he could only sell the modern clothes he was wearing. Under Xian's nervous gaze, Berg finally spoke:
"Please accept me as your attendant!"
Xian: "???"
You saved me, and now you want to become my attendant?
Xian's mind was full of question marks, yet Anlìyà and Robert beside him looked as though they understood perfectly, as if they had already guessed it.
"Your Highness, please rest assured. I swear by the great God of Sun and Justice that I will never use this favor to elevate myself."
"I am willing to dedicate my life to your safety and obey any command you give, whether reasonable or unreasonable, just or unjust. I will do everything in my power to carry it out. I ask only that your radiance shine upon me and protect me as I pursue the path of strength I yearn for."
Berg dropped to one knee and spoke solemnly. His voice was clear and powerful, and his sharply defined face was filled with sincerity.
Xian fell silent for a moment.
To be honest, he truly wanted to agree. After all, he had nothing after transmigrating here. If he could take in a fierce man who could kill an alpha wolf with one arrow as his subordinate, at least his basic safety would be guaranteed.
But he clearly remembered the latter half of Berg's oath.
