Early Thursday morning, with Mr. Fool's help, Angel used "sacrifice" and "bestowal" to exchange the Beyonder Characteristic of a Sheriff with Miss Magician for 600 pounds in cash.
After carefully counting the gold pounds in her hand, Angel praised the Fool from the bottom of her heart. This transaction had pushed her savings past 700 pounds again, so she no longer needed to scrimp and cut back on expenses.
After enjoying a simple homemade breakfast, she returned to the study and began copying the Secret Book she had borrowed from Sherlock. Skipping portions she already knew, as well as the strange praises of the Primordial Moon, she focused on recording the insights on various Mystic Rituals, spells, and curses.
But before long, Angel found herself stumped by several passages written in Ancient Feysac.
She understood common languages like Loenese and Feysac, and even knew a little Intisian. Yet she was completely at a loss when it came to Ancient Feysac, the common origin of those languages and supposedly the source of the languages spoken across the North Continent. She could understand certain original words preserved through linguistic evolution, but proper nouns left her helpless, and the shifting grammar made her vision go dark.
"Sherlock never mentioned this. Does he know the language, so he had no trouble reading it?"
She scratched her head and considered skipping those passages to read the later sections first. However, she discovered that what followed was closely connected to what came before. Skipping them could easily lead to unforeseen problems, or even create a mistaken first impression that would cause her to fail when using the related rituals in the future.
