• Angel accidentally entered the Spirit World above the Berserk Sea, saw Death's lingering power and its deadly storms, then found a safe route back to the Mirror World.

Angel intervened with a petrification attack, but the Feathered Serpent quickly healed, leaving Azik close to merging with it and Angel on the verge of losing control.

• Azik regained the memories of Salinger splitting his soul, with one half becoming the Feathered Serpent known as Artificial Death.
• Azik resisted the Feathered Serpent's pull, refusing to become a cold and inhuman Death, but his body began changing as the golden firebird ornament emerged.

• Angel left the Book World through its shrinking exit and appeared beside Klein in the Grey Mist, where she told him what had happened in Calderon.

The Nighthawks learned that Ince Zangwill had met with Palenke Tasib near Gura In City, prompting Leonard to warn Klein. Klein and Angel discussed the Numinous Episcopate’s plans and the Evernight Goddess’s possible interest in Death’s Uniqueness, then Klein received an unexpected answer from Artificial Death.
