Background / History
Amon is a son of the Ancient Sun God and Adam’s brother. He was already a King of Angels in the Third Epoch and lived through the Fourth Epoch’s imperial conflicts 514 957.
The Amon Family belonged to the Tudor Dynasty’s Five Families alongside the Abraham, Antigonus, Jacob, and Tamara Families. Its reputation centered on blasphemy and the theft of divine power, although knowledge of the family had become unusually obscured by the time the Tarot Club discussed it 268.
Amon also lived as Jacob, ancestor of the Jacob Family, while simultaneously retaining his identity within the Amon Family. This arrangement lasted more than a century. His knowledge of the family’s legacy allowed him to leave a secret avatar guarding its Fate Trojan Horse characteristic 1041.
During the Tudor era, Amon worked with Bethel Abraham and Antigonus in the Old One Research Group to prevent the Celestial Worthy’s resurrection. The Four Emperors War destroyed their old alliance, but Amon later recalls their competitive games when proposing a hunt for Outer Deity angels 1373.
Appearance
- Usual human form: A young man with short black hair, black eyes, a thin face, and a broad forehead 791 1353.
- Signature feature: A crystal monocle over his right eye, which he frequently adjusts while speaking 791 1041.
- Clothing: Appears in a black top hat and trench coat in Backlund; his main body also wears an old-fashioned black robe and pointed soft hat 791 1041.
- Disguises: His avatars appear as workers, gentlemen, animals, and stolen identities. The Nemo avatar retains blond hair and blue eyes rather than adopting Amon’s usual appearance 793 807 951.
- Later monocle: After the destruction of his divine main body, he replaces the vanished crystal monocle with an older brass-rimmed one 1340.
Personality
Amon treats confrontations as opportunities for amusement, experimentation, and discovery. He questions opponents while stealing from them, openly explains selected abilities, and remains outwardly relaxed even when an avatar is losing. Surprise interests him more than it visibly frightens him 791 810 951.
His playfulness conceals extensive preparation. He observes fighting styles before committing stronger forces, keeps additional avatars hidden, and exploits assumptions about his whereabouts. Angel’s Backlund trap succeeds partly because she predicts his caution and his priority of acquiring the Parasite glove’s characteristics 793 808 810 1041.
His conduct is not uniformly indifferent to others. The Goredolf hybrid develops responsibility toward Hope City after acquiring the governor’s memories and personality, although the others remain wary of deception. Later, Amon’s main body rejects a selfish impulse to abandon Earth’s crisis and instead holds an invasion portal shut 955 1265.
Abilities & Skills
Theft
Amon can steal possessions, Beyonder abilities, thoughts, and abstract relationships—not merely physical objects 791 795.
- Ability theft: Takes Angel’s Mirror Substitute, Cursed Black Flame, Invisible Silk Thread, and the Faceless transformation power of her Hypocrisy ring 791 792.
- Thought theft: Removes escape plans, attack intentions, and other thoughts as they arise 791 809.
- Spatial theft: Steals positions and distances, including exchanging places with an opponent 791 795 951.
- Connection theft: Appropriates the mystical link between Cottar and Klein’s historical projection 1101.
- Divine theft: Takes Bethel’s ritual, characteristics, and Uniqueness; later steals an Outer Deity’s bestowed power before it can be reclaimed 1153 1262.
- Avatar limits: Angel estimates that the Sequence 4 avatar she fights can temporarily retain only three stolen Beyonder abilities from the same target. She also identifies brief intervals between its thefts 791 792.
- Countermeasures: Prohibitions against theft can temporarily restrict him, while substitutes can prevent particular thefts from reaching the intended target 808 951.
Parasitism
Worms of Time allow Amon to inhabit living beings and appropriate bodies or supernatural constructs 793 808.
- Shallow parasitism: Leaves hosts with independent thoughts and actions while allowing the parasite to observe their surroundings 950.
- Deep parasitism: Deprives Klein of bodily control, prevents him from praying, and exposes his thoughts to Amon 972 973.
- Marionette infiltration: Parasitizes Klein’s servants and backup marionette, severing their connections to Klein 807 808.
- Historical projection infiltration: Converts one of Klein’s historical projections into an avatar and uses its connection to perceive Sefirah Castle 1101.
- Substitute defense: Angel destroys a targeted body through Mirror Substitute before an incoming Worm of Time can complete parasitism 808.
Avatars and Worms of Time
Amon distributes his consciousness and characteristics among numerous avatars, enabling simultaneous surveillance, infiltration, and combat 793 800.
- Backlund avatars are described as having at least Sequence 4 strength, with stronger examples potentially reaching Sequence 2 797 800.
- Acquiring additional Theft Master characteristics allows avatars to multiply; Amon can reunite distributed characteristics when needed 800 985.
- Animal forms include cats, crows, fish, and rats 793 795 807.
- Defeated avatars can return information, Worms of Time, and characteristics to the main body. Ordinary destruction does not reliably stop this process 974 1041.
- Concealment, characteristic convergence, and sufficiently powerful charms can interrupt the return, but nearby surviving avatars remain a risk 1041 1052.
- Worm bodies retain useful mystical status even after their characteristics are removed; Angel uses them as materials for enhanced charms 815.
Fate Manipulation — Fate Trojan Horse
Amon can observe, steal, replace, and distort fate. Ordinary avatars can use portions of this Sequence 2 authority without possessing its full power 795 808.
- Replaces the dying Theft Master demigod’s fate and identity, becoming Hazel’s teacher in the victim’s place 807.
- Steals Nemo’s name, identity, companions, and mission before entering Dream City 951.
- Confines Angel’s fate to a limited area, restricting mirror travel, disease transmission, and requests for assistance 808.
- Transfers the fate of being infected to a fish and assigns legal consequences to other Worms of Time 795 951.
- Uses exchanged fates to make Angel and Klein suffer an execution attack directed at himself 952.
- Cannot safely steal Klein’s fate immediately during their negotiation because it could awaken Sefirah Castle’s former owner 972.
Deception and Decryption
Amon exploits both an opponent’s understanding and the rules governing supernatural systems 821 955.
- Repeatedly interrogates Arrodes by deceiving its question rules, stealing its thoughts, and inserting foreign thoughts 821.
- Redirects Klein’s lightning strike away from its target 951.
- Deceives the Hand of Order into “correcting” a nonexistent fate exchange, causing his replacement of Goredolf 955.
- Conceals his impersonation of Termiboros from the Circle of Inevitability with Mr. Fool’s assistance 1354.
Time Manipulation
- Produces a clock-like manifestation of Worms of Time to slow Cottar and prevent his escape, allowing Klein to reach the direwolf’s castle 1101.
Contamination Research
The Dream City avatar possesses detailed knowledge of purification, pathway changes, and mystical substitution 1077.
- Explains methods involving shattered characteristics, Concealment, theft, Deception, Fooling, and Sefirah power 1077.
- Describes using the Similarity Law with Error-like authority to transfer contamination into a similar object, potentially even separating it from a living person 1077.
- Studies the Sword of Glory and experiments on imprisoned Outer Deity cultists 1150 1152.
- Warns that avatars sent into dangerous regions can have unusual independence and may absorb adjacent-pathway characteristics without immediately being reabsorbed 1077.
Sefirah Castle Access
- Gains authority comparable to Klein’s by allowing the Celestial Worthy’s will greater influence over himself 1335.
- Creates a stalemate in which neither participant can expel the other, and each can obstruct the other’s departure 1335.
- Ultimately relinquishes that authority, returning full control to Klein 1340.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Crystal Monocle / Error Uniqueness — His signature accessory is revealed to be the Error pathway’s Uniqueness among the remains left in Sefirah Castle 1341.
- Brass-Rimmed Monocle — Worn after the loss of his divine main body 1340.
- Stolen Bone Church — Isolates Leonard and Pallez from outside communication during the ambush at Pinster Street 1041.
- Second Blasphemy Slate — Uses the slate formed from the Ancient Sun God’s remains to block an invasion portal, merging with it to hold the passage shut 1265.
- Parasite Glove — Steals it during Angel’s Backlund trap; the Dream City avatar later receives it from Angel for experiments involving an Outer Deity believer’s fate 810 1153.
- Hand of Order — Controlled by the Goredolf avatar while governor; passes to Anne when she assumes the office 952 957.
Relationships
- Ancient Sun God — Father. Amon refers to the Second Blasphemy Slate as containing his father’s research beyond the Sequences 1073.
- Adam — Brother and frequent strategic collaborator. Adam delivers Klein into Amon’s custody after George III’s downfall 971 972.
- Klein Moretti / Mr. Fool — Principal rival over Sefirah Castle. Their relationship also includes tactical cooperation, including concealing the Termiboros substitution and staging a false struggle against the resurrecting Pillars 972 1340 1354.
- Angel Granger — Enemy, investigator, and occasional negotiating partner. She destroys or neutralizes several avatars, while the Dream City avatar supplies technical knowledge and assists her administration 810 974 1077 1151.
- Pallez Zoroast — Same-pathway prey whose Sequence 1 characteristic is Amon’s final apotheosis ingredient. Amon’s ambush costs Pallez that characteristic, but Pallez survives at Sequence 2 1041 1055.
- Leonard Mitchell — Pallez’s host and the person through whom Amon locates him. Pallez ejects Leonard from the Bone Church so he can seek help 1041.
- Hazel Maht — Deceived student. Amon replaces her teacher and accompanies her home under the stolen identity 795 807.
- Goredolf — Host whose identity, memories, and personality accidentally merge with an avatar, producing an unusually responsible version of Amon 955.
- Anne Gustav — Successor to the Goredolf avatar as governor. She imprisons him as her assistant rather than granting his request for death 957.
- Bethel Abraham — Former research companion and later victim of Amon’s apotheosis theft. After Bethel’s return, they again meet during the hunt for Outer Deity angels 1262 1373.
- Antigonus — Former Old One Research Group companion; Amon proposes reviving their competitive hunting game 1373.
- Fors Wall — Unwitting route back to Earth after Amon follows her through the cosmos; she later questions his claimed allegiance to the Circle of Inevitability 1354.
- Arrodes — Interrogation target. Amon’s repeated manipulation leaves the mirror terrified of his name and monocle 821.
- Termiboros — Injured Angel of Redemption whose identity and fate Amon steals during the Cordu ritual 1354.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Silver City and the Approach to Backlund
- The Tarot Club discusses Amon’s appearance near the City of Silver and the obscured history of his family 268.
- Amon parasitizes Derrick; Mr. Fool discovers and removes the intrusion 791.
- His suspected arrival in Backlund prompts Klein to leave the city and pursue demigod advancement to better conceal his unusual nature 718.
Backlund Avatar Campaign
- An avatar confronts Angel beside the Tussock River, exposes her Golden Queen identity, and investigates the influences on her fate. Angel defeats it, but other avatars deliberately watch rather than intervene 791 792 793.
- Amon absorbs the dying Theft Master demigod’s power, replaces his identity, and uses Hazel to reach Böklund Street 794 807.
- His forces attack Klein and Angel simultaneously. Angel’s betrayal charm turns the avatars’ constituent characteristics against Amon, while Pallez gathers the expelled characteristics 808 810.
- Angel later reassures Arrodes that the Backlund avatars have been eliminated, though she remains cautious about possible compromise 821.
Dream City / Hope City
- Angel discovers that Nemo is an avatar responsible for the local Worm of Time infestation. During the confrontation, Governor Goredolf proves to be another Amon and destroys the Nemo avatar 951 952.
- Goredolf explains that his original infiltration fourteen years earlier accidentally merged him with the governor. Nemo arrived six years earlier, creating both an opportunity for escape and a threat to the city 955.
- After Anne restores the laws, she keeps the Goredolf avatar confined as her assistant, tasked with rebuilding the legal system 957.
- The avatar later researches artifacts, advises Angel on her honorific name, and investigates cults infiltrating Partis 1077 1150 1151 1152.
Klein’s Capture and Rescue
- Following George III’s defeat, Adam’s imagined scenario leaves Klein vulnerable to an Amon-controlled former marionette 971 972.
- Amon offers to take Sefirah Castle and its dangers in exchange for Klein’s safety and possible advancement. Klein refuses, and Amon begins transporting him toward the Forsaken Land 972.
- Angel rescues Klein as a newly advanced Catastrophe Demoness. Amon accepts the avatar’s petrification, while its characteristic escapes eastward 974.
- Klein later interprets the surrender as an attempt to avoid City of Calamity contamination reaching Amon’s main body 980.
Pallez and the Forsaken Land
- Amon’s main body leaves the expected battlefield and uses the Jacob treasure’s hidden avatar to locate Pallez in Backlund, taking his Sequence 1 characteristic 1041 1042.
- In Chernobyl, an avatar gives Klein historical information and directions toward the Giant King’s Court. Its apparent suicide conceals an attempted fate-theft scheme and the departure of a Worm of Time 1074 1075.
- Amon assists in restraining Cottar, then appears at the Giant King’s Court seeking the First Blasphemy Slate 1101 1121.
Apotheosis and the Apocalypse Portal
- Zarathus alleges that Amon and Adam are negotiating with Outer Deities and that Amon intends to exploit Bethel’s return. Klein treats the information as partly credible but unverified 1236.
- Amon usurps Bethel’s apotheosis and becomes Error. He immediately gives Klein the location of the special mirror world threatening Angel 1262.
- As Outer Deity power enters through the flesh door, Amon blocks it with the Second Blasphemy Slate. He suppresses an alternate self urging him to flee and pursue personal power 1265.
Sefirah Castle and Loss of Godhood
- Amon enters Sefirah Castle after Klein’s advancement and gains comparable control by loosening his suppression of the Celestial Worthy 1335.
- The apparent struggle becomes a joint deception intended to pressure the resurrecting Pillars without permitting the Celestial Worthy to awaken fully 1340.
- Declaring that becoming Lord of Mysteries was only a means to an already achieved goal, Amon abandons his claim. Klein destroys his main body, retaining the Error Uniqueness and other remnants 1340 1341.
Return as an Angel of Redemption
- After fleeing Earth, Amon follows Fors through the cosmos and exploits the Cordu sacrifice to replace the injured Termiboros. Mr. Fool helps conceal the substitution 1354.
- Angel’s apparent pursuit and Amon’s escape are deliberately permitted as part of a larger plan 1354.
- Amon later meets Antigonus and Bethel, gives them Zedus’s severed hand, and proposes a competition hunting Outer Deity angels 1373.
- He subsequently advocates pathway changes based on overlapping authorities and Sefirah symbolism rather than adjacency alone 1403.
