Background / History

Klein was originally Zhou Mingrui, a man from Earth who transmigrated into the body of Klein Moretti after the original Klein's suicide. He chose to live as Klein Moretti, a Hoy University history graduate with an older brother, Benson, and a younger sister, Melissa. The Moretti family’s financial circumstances were initially strained, making Klein's Nighthawk income significant to their recovery 5 22 139 170.

After surviving a multiple-suicide case connected to the Antigonus Family Notebook, he was recruited by the Nighthawks as a clerical worker. He soon became an active participant in supernatural investigations, learning handgun use, divination, charm-making, and the Acting Method while working alongside Angel Granger, Leonard Mitchell, Dunn Smith, and the Tingen team 22 29 117 139.

At the same time, Klein used the mysterious grey mist to establish and secretly lead the Tarot Club as The Fool. He initially joined its meetings as the enigmatic “World,” while investigating whether fellow member “Empress” was Angel Granger 5 91.

Klein died during the Tingen crisis involving Ince Zangwill, but resurrected through a power he later recognized as an early manifestation of Miracle. His apparent death allowed him to abandon the public identity of Klein Moretti and operate under new identities in Backlund and at sea 170 1031.

Appearance

Klein’s original appearance is that of a scholarly young man with short black hair and brown eyes. After becoming a Miracle Worker, he reconstructs himself at roughly 1.8 meters tall and physically stronger than before 29 1124.

  • Often wears a black windbreaker, silk top hat, and formal clothing.
  • Uses gold-rimmed glasses and a cane as part of certain personas.
  • Can completely alter his face, height, physique, age, clothing, and mannerisms through Faceless abilities.
  • His best-known disguise, Gehrman Sparrow, has a thin, stern face, a cold demeanor, and an intimidating adventurer’s presence 355 383 499.
  • Under severe spiritual pressure, his body can dissolve into or re-form from Spirit Worms 1124 1329.

Personality

Klein is analytical, cautious, and highly adaptable. He prefers gathering information, preparing countermeasures, and avoiding fights beyond his ability, though he can decisively embrace danger when protecting others or maintaining a necessary persona 307 493 568.

His pragmatism is balanced by a strong conscience. He remains concerned for his family, former teammates, vulnerable civilians, and the inhabitants of isolated communities such as Silver City and Moon City. His desire to give Benson and Melissa a better life is a major motive behind his early advancement 139 493 1093.

Klein’s many identities create a persistent psychological burden. The conflict between Klein Moretti, Sherlock Moriarty, Gehrman Sparrow, and other roles nearly destabilizes his Faceless state, while his negative personality, Zhou Mingrui, later manifests in Dreamland. He ultimately defeats this personality and becomes more conscious of the need to preserve his humanity 383 626 627.
