Background / History
Team Rocket created Mewtwo through research intended to produce a Pokémon that surpassed Mew. After escaping, it learned that Mew possessed the genes and forms of all Pokémon, making Mew its genetic origin. 128 134 391
Early in its travels, Mewtwo found an Energy Cube hidden in Dragonite’s mail and received a letter that finally gave it a “satisfactory answer,” easing some of its anger. It later arrived in Wutong Town, challenged local Trainers, and was offered work by Lin Feng rather than treated as an enemy. 30 36 37
At Lin Feng’s plantation, Mewtwo worked by using invisible psychic hands to harvest ripe crops. It began reconsidering its prejudice toward humans and Pokémon, deciding to observe their relationships and create a test to identify exceptional Trainers. 37 39
Mewtwo’s test became a lethal “game” in Kanto: it lured Trainers with the promise of the strongest-Trainer title, used Psychic Power to immobilize challengers, and ordered its rescued Dragonite to fight for freedom. It apparently took the life of a surrendering Trainer, leaving six Poké Balls behind. 134 135 136
Ash shielding Pikachu from Dragonite’s Hyper Beam forced Mewtwo to reconsider its beliefs. After Pikachu’s grief-driven lightning defeated Dragonite, Mewtwo ended the game, had Mew heal the injured Pokémon, and erased the memories of everyone present except Ash and Pikachu. 137
After its hatred toward humans subsided, Mewtwo returned to Lin Feng without a clear purpose. It resumed plantation work, brought several Pokémon rescued from Team Rocket experiments under its protection, and gradually accepted Lin Feng’s support and guidance. 140 141 142
Appearance
Mewtwo is a humanoid Pokémon that can pass through human society by transforming into a human form. Its usual disguise is a fair-skinned, sharp-featured pink-haired young man. 37 383
- Uses a humanoid human disguise while traveling and working at the plantation. 37 295
- Reverts to its original Pokémon form for major battles. 283
- Mega Mewtwo Y has long hair-like braids, red eyes, purplish-red hands and claws, and a tail repositioned behind its head. 520 521
- Mega Mewtwo X is its Fighting-type-oriented Mega form. 566 579
Personality
Mewtwo is proud, independent, and intensely driven to test its strength. Having never known defeat for much of its early life, it speaks bluntly to powerful Pokémon and initially regards its own power as justification for imposing its rules on others. 130 135
Its time in Wutong Town and its encounters with Ash, Pikachu, Mew, and Lin Feng soften this outlook. Mewtwo becomes curious about human–Pokémon bonds, accepts ordinary work, and eventually recognizes that power without understanding is insufficient. 39 137 140
Despite its stern demeanor, Mewtwo is easily embarrassed when its care for others is noticed. It becomes Goodra’s reluctant but dependable guardian, feeds it, verifies food is safe, and blushes when Lin Feng praises its nurturing behavior. 142 143
Its desire to improve remains central to its character. Defeats by Giratina and its encounters with Kyogre, Red, and the Tapu guardians make it more reflective rather than less determined. 292 520 564
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Power
Mewtwo’s Psychic Power is its defining strength, functioning as both overwhelming force and a highly versatile utility.
- Harvests large quantities of crops simultaneously with invisible psychic hands. 37
- Immobilizes multiple fully evolved Pokémon at once and restrains human opponents. 135 136
- Creates Psychic Barriers capable of blocking powerful attacks, including Articuno’s Brave Bird. 519
- Uses Teleport for rapid movement across vast distances and infiltration of Team Rocket facilities. 388 391 560
- Erases memories from humans and Pokémon. 137
- Can isolate an area with materialized psychic energy, though the barrier cannot be sustained for long because those inside may suffocate. 170
- Its barriers can be broken by extraordinary emotional bonds, as Ash and later Lin Feng demonstrate. 137 141
Combat Techniques
Its recorded move set includes Disable, Psychic Power, Swift, Ancient Power, Life Dew, and Psychic. 126
- Uses Agility and Psychic attacks to evade and reposition against Tapu Koko. 283
- Uses Calm Mind before challenging Giratina in the Distortion World. 398
- Uses Mirror Coat to reflect part of Kyogre’s Origin Pulse back at Kyogre. 558
- Uses Psychic Shock and other Psychic attacks against Kyogre while exploiting its superior speed. 559
Transformation and Illusion
Mewtwo can transform into a convincing human form for travel, employment, and anonymity. 37 295
- Uses a pink-haired young man’s appearance while communicating with Lin Feng. 383
- Uses Grand Illusion on itself to anonymously defeat a Trainer rather than capturing another Pokémon. 384
Mega Evolution
Mewtwo can Mega Evolve autonomously by surpassing its limits rather than relying on a Trainer and Mega Stone. 294 520
- Mega Mewtwo Y — An extreme Psychic Power-focused form achieved after breaking through during its battle with Red. 520 521
- Mega Mewtwo X — A second form connected to Fighting-type power and physical strength. 566 579
- Early use of Mega Evolution heavily drains its energy and can leave its power unstable. 560 565
Equipment / Items

- Giratina — A superior rival whose defeat of Mewtwo motivates its pursuit of Mega Evolution and further growth. 291 292 521
