Chiba Makoto joined the Fourth Division as Unohana Retsu’s disciple, developed unusual healing abilities, and treated residents suffering from soul loss while drawing the attention of Aizen Sōsuke. He grew closer to several Soul Reapers, helped Kuchiki Byakuya bring Hisana and Rukia into his care, and turned his attention to advancing medical arts.

  • Zaraki Kenpachi tried to recruit Chiba Makoto, but Makoto joined the Fourth Division and became Unohana Retsu’s disciple, eventually assigned to its Gynecology Department.

Chiba Makoto saved Matsumoto Rangiku through Ichimaru Gin’s sacrifice, then survived a deadly Adjuchas attack that exposed more of his evolving abilities to Aizen Sōsuke. After learning about Sōya Azashiro and becoming closer to Shaolin Fon, Makoto began Shunpo training with Yoruichi Shihoin, ending by targeting her captain’s haori.

  • Chiba Makoto treated Matsumoto Rangiku by transplanting parts of Ichimaru Gin’s soul, then discovered a widow whose hollowed-out spirit body concealed a dangerous Adjuchas.

Chiba Makoto advanced his Shunpo and healing skills while building connections with Kuchiki Byakuya, Ichimaru Gin, and others, all the while growing wary of Aizen Sōsuke’s interest in him. After helping Byakuya bring Hisana and Rukia into his care, Makoto treated Kensei Muguruma’s severe injury and decided to investigate the limits of medical arts.

  • Yoruichi Shihoin trained Chiba Makoto in Shunpo by having Shaolin Fon attack him, and Makoto stopped Fon’s strike with his Zanpakuto’s power even without holding it.
  • Yoruichi Shihoin’s prank dressed Makoto in Kuchiki heirlooms and provoked Kuchiki Byakuya into a duel, which Makoto won before Byakuya later apologized and offered him a Ginpa'kasa.
