Ch. 601Overstepping the bounds
Key plot points and events
- Sangying Sect leaders Tan Chunyi and Pu Chunxu decide to seize Chen Fei, preferring to capture and control him but willing to kill him if he resists. They want influence over the secret realm without simply removing the Yuan Chen Sword Sect’s leader.
- Tan reveals that two missing cultivators, Duanmu Xiao and Kou Yuanheng, both had ties to Chen Fei. The leaders suspect the men may be dead, though they doubt Chen Fei could have killed Kou Yuanheng so soon after reaching the Joint Aperture Realm.
- To investigate and handle Chen Fei, Sangying Sect dispatches the powerful Wu triplets, whose combined strength rivals an ordinary late Joint Aperture Realm cultivator.
- Meanwhile, the Panfeng Sect sends an advance party to the Haifeng Domain. Its leader, Wei Zikuan, is welcomed by Qu Qingsheng, and the Yuan Chen Sword Sect helps the newcomers choose a site for their headquarters.
- The Qianren Sect’s Ye Qishan learns of the alliance between the two sects and worries that Panfeng’s arrival will obstruct Qianren’s effort to gain control of the secret realm. Panfeng plans to take none of Yuan Chen’s existing resources—including the realm—and will arrive in a month, leaving Qianren little time to act without violating alliance rules.
Character developments and interactions
- Tan Chunyi proves calculating and cautious: he investigates Chen Fei’s possible involvement in the disappearances and chooses a stronger team rather than risk sending a weaker cultivator.
- Pu Chunxu balances sect affairs with cultivation. His superior talent and high-grade joint aperture contrast with Tan’s more limited prospects, which have led Tan to manage the sect’s daily business.
- Chen Fei remains in seclusion, unaware that Sangying Sect has targeted him.
- Qu Qingsheng and Wei Zikuan interact cordially and respectfully, laying the groundwork for cooperation between their sects.
- Ye Qishan becomes increasingly anxious as he recognizes how Panfeng’s proximity and strength could protect Yuan Chen. Panfeng’s refusal to claim Yuan Chen’s resources puzzles him as well.
Significant themes
- Power and political maneuvering: Sects seek control through alliances, coercion, and strategic positioning rather than open conflict alone.
- Uncertainty and suspicion: The unexplained disappearances invite speculation, but even Sangying’s leaders cannot be sure Chen Fei is responsible.
- Restraint under rules: Qianren’s plans are constrained by the Thousand Feathers Alliance’s laws, despite the political disorder.
- Strength versus ambition: The Wu Brothers’ careful cultivation and Panfeng’s defensive expertise show how potential and specialized abilities shape sect strategy.
