Background / History
Tang San entered Nuoding Academy and became Yu Xiaogang's disciple. Yu Xiaogang regarded him as an exceptionally valuable subject for validating his theories, having learned that Tang San possessed Innate Full Soul Power, the Clear Sky Hammer, and ties to the Clear Sky Sect through his surname and Martial Soul 7.
He developed an immediate fixation on surpassing Xiao Chen, believing Xiao Wu favored strength and resolving to become stronger than anyone else 7. Tang San entered the Soul Hunting Forest with Yu Xiaogang to obtain his first soul ring, intending to use the resulting power to defeat Xiao Chen 9 14.
His rivalry with Xiao Chen repeatedly ended in defeat and humiliation. After Xiao Chen easily beat him, Tang San swore revenge, continued studying under Yu Xiaogang, and planned to secretly study Xiao Chen's methods 18. Xiao Chen later gave him the Forgiveness Hat, which reduced his resistance to Xiao Chen and Xiao Wu's relationship despite his jealousy 19.
Tang San later became entangled with Ma Hongjun, Oscar, Dai Mubai, and the Shrek Academy group. His relationships with them were marked by distrust, coercion, and violence: Ma Hongjun accused him of arranging a Soul Beast ambush, and Tang San nearly used a hidden weapon against him while trapped in a humiliating situation 90 91. He poisoned a woman to force Oscar and Ma Hongjun to assist him against Bu Le, then was beaten by Tian Ya and Bu Le, whose Martial Souls countered his Blue Silver Grass 114 115.
After rejection by Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Tang San became increasingly determined to gain recognition through hidden weapons, tournament success, and the support of high-ranking Soul Masters 172 174 155. His attempts to promote his creations at auction backfired when Xiao Chen's flying sword drew bids near ten million Gold Soul Coins, while Tang San overestimated the worth of his Hidden Dragon Dart 196 197.
Prince Xue Xing's side later forced Tang San to forge hidden weapons in an imperial blacksmith shop under a weekly quota, leaving him unable to leave until his work was completed 287. Tang Hao eventually visited him there, revealed himself as Tang San's father, and discussed their shared hostility toward Xiao Chen 311.
Tang San later impersonated a high-ranking official and manipulated the Seven-ring Soul Saint Shi Nian into attempting to assassinate Xiao Chen 262. After Xiao Chen killed Shi Nian, Tang San tried to flee, knelt and kowtowed in an attempt to save himself, and was killed by Xiao Chen 264.
Personality
Tang San is proud, competitive, and intensely resentful of being overshadowed by Xiao Chen. He repeatedly interprets Xiao Chen's strength, status, and relationships as personal provocations, then seeks opportunities to surpass or eliminate him 14 125 151.
He is calculating and vindictive when pressured. He considers killing Ma Hongjun with a hidden weapon, poisons others to compel cooperation, manipulates Dai Mubai and Yu Xiaogang, and falsely invokes Xiao Chen as his “brother” while trying to escape Prince Xue Xing 91 114 192 223.
His confidence often becomes overconfidence. He dismisses warnings about stronger opponents, assumes his hidden weapons will command enormous value, and repeatedly believes he can recover from humiliation or defeat 112 197 319. When confronted by Xiao Chen's overwhelming power, however, he becomes fearful and submissive 264.
