Steward Yao oversaw the Worship Hall's servants and maid recruitment. When he found Foreman Yu incapacitated in the backyard, he questioned the assembled servants, confirmed that Le Ling was responsible, and recognized the value of her Heavenly Fox Martial Soul. Rather than punish her, he promoted her to foreman and ordered her to register the new staff and report to the Worship Hall's logistics department 1.

As foreman, Le Ling was placed under Steward Yao's direction for duties related to the Great Offering's daily life. He briefed her on Qian Daoliu's habits and dietary preferences, then summoned her to care for the Great Offering when he became drunk on his birthday 2.

He also understands the significance of Le Ling to his master and becomes notably attentive to her comfort, safety, movements, and preferences after learning her identity 3 7.

He is willing to be underhanded when advancing Qian Daoliu's wishes. Alongside A Jian, he falsely claimed that a drunken Qian Daoliu had driven away every other maid and repeatedly called for Le Ling, successfully persuading her to return to the Worship Hall 29. He later threatened to arrest the Papal Palace cooks to force Le Ling to attend dinner in the Worship Hall 39.

Despite his resourcefulness, Steward Yao is easily flustered by Qian Daoliu's displeasure.
