Background

Reiko is the eldest daughter of the declining Asai Family, a lower noble house. Her father, Asai Kosuke, was the former family head and a Seat Officer of the Third Division, but died fighting a Menos. Following his death, Reiko was orphaned, her uncle Asai Yuhei became family head, and the family steadily declined until it relocated from the Seireitei to the outskirts of Rukongai. 562 598

Her father’s service inspired her to enter the Shinigami Academy, join the Gotei 13, become a Seat Officer, and restore the Asai family’s standing. Her uncle instead sought to remove her from the academy and marry her to Nagano Ichiro for political advantage. 563 579 603

Reiko initially endured mistreatment from Yuhei’s branch of the family, including being made to live in a remote courtyard and enter her own home by its side door.
