Ahh!
A scalp-tingling screech rang out. Watching this scene, Lin Xian's expression turned cold. This girl was still young—even though he'd witnessed plenty of human tragedies these past days, he still felt a pang of reluctance.
Just as Lin Xian thought the girl was about to be devoured by the corpse and the bug, a sudden invisible shockwave burst from the girl's body, roaring with a deafening boom. Before Lin Xian could react, the door in front of him—along with himself—was sent flying by a blast of air!
Boom!
In an instant, all the glass in the room shattered, and the furniture broke into pieces.
Lin Xian's heart pounded with terror as the shockwave hurled him backward, slamming him hard into the iron gate of the living room window. His eardrums buzzed!
Luckily, his body had been strengthened; otherwise, he would've passed out on the spot.
The sudden upheaval shook the entire apartment building. In an instant, countless howls erupted, filling the hallway in a dense swarm.
"It's over!"
Lin Xian scrambled up from the floor, realizing things had gone south. At that moment, the 'Old Man Li' controlled by the strange bug had somehow been blasted into the living room too.
He flicked on his flashlight and saw 'Old Man Li' crawling on all fours, leaping up from the ground with a screech, charging straight at him with a thick stench of rot.
Lin Xian sucked in a sharp breath, blood surging. He stepped back a few paces, raised his hand, and fired a Wind Cannon!
Shh!
In his fury, he poured almost all his strength into it—a fierce Wind Gun shot out!
Ugh!!!
In an instant, black blood splattered everywhere. The grotesque corpse took the Wind Gun head-on, half its face blown off, tumbling to the side with chunks of flesh scattering on the floor.
Shocked but without hesitation, Lin Xian grabbed a short knife and charged, plunging it deep into the Black Bug!
Thud!
Squeal~!!
The Black Bug let out a strange cry, its countless legs thrashing wildly. Lin Xian gripped the knife tightly, not daring to let his guard down. But the bug, unable to break free, twisted its body and snapped itself clean off the blade, then quickly vanished into the shadows.
"Damn it, this thing's this smart?!"
Lin Xian cursed under his breath. The commotion had drawn countless zombies charging up. He hadn't expected his shelter to be gone in an instant. Grabbing his backpack, he stuffed in whatever supplies he could, then fixed his gaze on the hallway.
The girl lay motionless on the floor. After causing such a ruckus, was this chick still unconscious?
Lin Xian's CPU was running at full speed. No doubt about it—this girl was some kind of Esper. But he had no idea why she'd come to him. In a rush, he gritted his teeth, figuring he'd save her first. So he scooped her up and bolted down the Fire Escape.
With his shelter destroyed, he had no choice but to charge into the Underground Tunnel. Countless zombies flooded the stairwell from all directions, chasing after Lin Xian as he sprinted.
Thud! Thud!
Along the way, Lin Xian used his Wind Cannon skill to take down a few zombies. Finally, he reached the side of the "Infinite." He pressed his hand against the body, the Mechanical Heart activated, and the cockpit door opened. Lin Xian shoved the girl in first, then climbed in himself.
Bang! The heavy door sealed shut. The passage lights flickered on. Lin Xian leaned against the steel wall, finally letting out a long sigh of relief.
Ugh! Ugh!
The tide of corpses surged forward. Within minutes, the entire train was surrounded, countless claws scraping against it with a grating screech.
But the zombies clearly had no idea that this steel behemoth weighed hundreds of tons, and even its thinnest parts were at least 40 millimeters thick. Ordinary bullets would only leave a white scratch, not even a dent. How could the rotting claws of zombies do any damage?
Lin Xian wiped the sweat off his brow. He went to Carriage 1 and opened one side of the Light Shield. The interior lights instantly illuminated countless twisted, rotting, howling faces. Click—he pulled the Light Shield shut again.
Luckily, he'd finished installing the full armor plating as planned today. Still uneasy, he double-checked everything, then turned off all the lights inside.
Meanwhile, he went to the Cockpit and found a black Remote Control.
At the other end of the tunnel, he'd set up a remote-controlled Loudspeaker as a decoy—just in case he got surrounded by a zombie horde and needed to start the train.
Doo~
A loud sound echoed from afar, immediately drawing all the zombies into a mindless stampede.
Before long, the scratching noises outside the train gradually died down.
Inside the train, Lin Xian breathed a sigh of relief. He turned on his phone's flashlight and began checking the girl's injuries.
But to his surprise, she had no external wounds at all. The blood on her didn't seem to be hers...
This girl... was strange.
Lin Xian looked at the sleeping little girl and sighed inwardly. This girl's appearance had completely thrown off his plans. Worst of all, his gut told him she definitely had some special ability—otherwise, there's no way she could've made it safely through the night to his door without a single scratch.
Taking along a girl like this was undoubtedly a potential wild card for Lin Xian.
After some thought, Lin Xian found a few ropes, tied the sleeping girl's hands and feet securely, then carried her to Carriage 2. He grabbed a blanket and laid her down on it.
Once that was done, Lin Xian returned to Carriage 1 and started planning his next move.
Just then, Lin Xian frowned and reopened the map to search.
"If I start the train tomorrow and head straight along Line 3 to find Teacher Chen, would that be closer?"
It was a bold idea. If it worked, it would cut down a huge chunk of the danger along the way, and he could also test the train's functions.
Sure enough, checking the map, Lin Xian found that Chen Sixuan's neighborhood was less than three hundred meters from the nearest subway exit.
"Heh~"
He let out a sneering laugh. "Prime location, Teacher Chen—you definitely picked the right place for this house..."
A sleepless night. Lin Xian spent his first night on the Infinite, and though the sturdy fortress he'd built with his own hands gave him some sense of security, the upheaval tonight still left him unsettled.
This was his first encounter with the 'weirdness' of the night. It was just a strange insect, but that thing was utterly disgusting and clearly far smarter than the zombies. On top of that, a mysterious girl was now lying in his carriage—how could he possibly sleep peacefully?
14:00. Dawn had come an hour later again.
Lin Xian was inside the tunnel, unable to see any light, but his watch told him it should already be daylight outside.
He sat down in the driver's seat of the Infinite. A flash of arcane light flickered in his eyes, and his entire being seemed to merge with the aura of this colossal machine.
Wooom—
The turbocharger began to roar. The crankshaft and connecting rods let out a piercing metallic screech. The horizon gate opened. Clack! The orange-yellow headlights instantly turned the pitch-black subway tunnel bright as day.
Lin Xian's brows tightened.
Time to move, old friend.
Clang-thump, clang-thump—
The steel beast, dormant for decades, was awakened once more. Dust and iron filings slid off in cascades. The Infinite, dragging three armored carriages, slowly merged from the maintenance track onto the main subway line, devouring the Black Mist ahead as it roared onward!
