Kiki had only sketched out a preliminary design for the Water-Oxygen Circulation System based on Lin Xian's plans. With rainwater and health concerns in mind, Lin Xian also intended to clear out Carriage 3, connect it to the locomotive's water tank, install a purification system, and get some protected growing cabinets.

Clean water, clean air, green plants, and vegetables—Lin Xian had already planned for all of these. After Xu Jin told him there was something wrong with the rain in the Black Night, he felt an even greater urgency to build such a carriage.

With the coming snow and ice and the black-rain bacteria, plants and animals around the world would also face extinction.

In Carriage 2, the Information Center's computer still gave off a faint glow. Connected to the train's radar, Electro-Optical Aiming System, and radar system, it could now monitor part of the area ahead of the train.

The night was dark, the cold wind biting.

Since the train's heating system had not been fully repaired, a damp chill permeated the carriages.

Kiki and Sha Sha had gone to bed. Chen Sixuan was keeping watch in the Cockpit, while Da Lou stood ready at the rear of Carriage 5.

A faint voice calling her name woke Lou Shasha in her bunk.

At the sound, she instinctively opened her eyes and drowsily searched for its source.

The lights were out throughout the train. She hooked a finger under the blackout shutter and lifted it slightly. Only a trace of starlight filtered through the slatted armor outside the window, faintly illuminating the outlines of things inside.

Was she imagining it?

Lou Shasha thought she had heard a man calling her. She looked around, searching for Lin Xian.

There was no one there.
