Ch. 41Fierce Battle
Plot points and events
- Qian Yu realizes Tang Hai’s shelter was a trap: Tang intended to use the convoys as bait to draw the Corpse Tide away while he escaped. Qian turns the Black Flood Dragon convoy around to confront him rather than flee into the fog.
- At the ruined outpost, Tang Hai and Feng Yuming begin loading vehicles and supplies onto a train. They had staged the shelter to appear safe, leaving vulnerable members of their own group inside as a decoy.
- Qian’s convoy returns unexpectedly, and the two sides open fire. Lou Ye and Lou Shasha arrive amid the fighting, while Zombies and Corpse Hounds pour in from the fog.
- The Black Flood Dragon forces initially overwhelm Tang Hai’s men. Qian kills Feng Yuming—or seems to—then realizes Tang is preparing to escape by train.
- Feng Yuming reappears transformed into an Esper, with a hardened insect-like claw, and kills Old Eagle. A secretly allied convoy leader shoots Qian in the head. With Qian dead and their forces caught between gunmen and Zombies, the Black Flood Dragon convoy is left in a desperate position.
- The allied leader and Feng Yuming carry out their bargain: the leader’s men are to take half the weapons and equipment, then escape in the vehicles.
Character developments
- Qian Yu is perceptive enough to uncover Tang’s plan and decisive enough to turn back, but his confidence collapses when he discovers Feng Yuming’s abilities and his supposed allies’ betrayal. He is killed before he can seize the train.
- Tang Hai is revealed as a calculating, ruthless opportunist who sacrifices even members of his own group to make his escape.
- Feng Yuming is exposed as an Esper. His monstrous transformation lets him survive Qian’s apparent execution and dominate the fight.
- Lou Ye and Lou Shasha fight their way into the chaotic outpost, with Shasha using the pickup’s defensive spikes while searching for Kiki and the others.
- The fat convoy leader reveals himself as Tang and Feng’s secret partner, choosing betrayal and a dangerous escape over loyalty to Qian.
Character interactions
- Qian first challenges Tang’s motives, then leads his convoy back against him.
- Tang and Feng coordinate their escape plan, while Feng investigates the shelter and Tang organizes the train loading.
- Lou Shasha supports Lou Ye during their attempted advance and search.
- Qian kills Feng—or believes he has—before Feng turns the tables and kills Old Eagle. The fat leader then shoots Qian, completing the double-cross.
- Feng and the fat leader confirm their bargain over the spoils as the Zombies close in.
