Ch. 62Dissatisfaction

Xia Qiu developed lungs and learned to breathe both above and below water, then grew dissatisfied with the meager gains from hunting East Blue pirates. He began considering a journey to the Grand Line, where a hooded passenger aboard the Black Horn Pirates’ ship also prepared to seek a new partner.

  • Xia Qiu explained that his lungs had developed through years of hunting marine mammals and Fish-Men, allowing him to switch between lung and gill breathing.
  • Xia Qiu swam with Moo to investigate a ship, then rammed the pirate vessel and ate all twelve pirates after they jumped into the sea.
  • Xia Qiu found the pirates’ Reinforcement Energy too weak and costly to obtain, and his desire to explore the Grand Line overcame his fear of it.
  • The Black Horn Pirates crossed Reverse Mountain and celebrated reaching the Grand Line.
  • A hooded passenger judged that the Black Horn Pirates would not survive the route, planned to escort them to the next town, and decided to find another partner.

Ch. 63Attack

Xia Qiu, still desperate to grow stronger before entering the Grand Line, attacked a powerful Marine warship near Loguetown. Smoker took charge of the Loguetown branch as Yuchimura departed, while Xia Qiu began ramming the departing ship.

  • Near Loguetown, civilians watched a pirate ship sink after a huge sea fish attacked it, and Smoker took over the branch from Commodore Yuchimura.
  • Smoker explained that he had volunteered for Loguetown to stop pirates from inheriting Roger's will and heading to the Grand Line.
  • Xia Qiu grew frustrated with the small amount of Reinforcement Energy he had gained from pirates and decided he needed to become stronger before going to the Grand Line.
  • Xia Qiu spotted Yuchimura's Marine warship heading toward the Calm Belt and suspected a powerful Marine was aboard.
  • Xia Qiu charged the warship and smashed a large hole in its hull, then circled around to ram it again.

Ch. 64Fight to the Death

Commodore Yuchimura dove into the sea to stop the gigantic fish Xia Qiu from damaging his warship, but its strength and defenses overwhelmed his attacks. Yuchimura was injured and running out of air, leaving him desperate for a chance to surface.

  • Yuchimura learned that the fish had rammed holes into the warship and damaged several compartments, so he stripped down and dove into the sea to confront it.
  • Yuchimura dodged Xia Qiu’s charge and slashed at his scales, but his sword cut through only one scale before the layered armor stopped it.
  • Xia Qiu attacked Yuchimura with four tentacles; Yuchimura wounded two with Arc Circle Slash but could not sever them.
  • Xia Qiu struck Yuchimura with his pectoral fin, injuring his left arm and forcing the air from his lungs.
  • Yuchimura realized he could not kill Xia Qiu underwater and began searching for a chance to surface before he ran out of air.

Ch. 65Despair

Xia Qiu and Yuchimura fought underwater, but Yuchimura’s sword could barely penetrate the giant fish’s muscle, while Xia Qiu’s size and tentacles gradually wore him down. The chapter left Yuchimura injured and short of air as Xia Qiu waited near the surface, still blocking his way.

  • Yuchimura tried to circle past Xia Qiu and reach the surface, but Xia Qiu struck him with his tail and pursued him above water.
  • Yuchimura stabbed Xia Qiu twice, but his sword only pierced the fish’s scales and muscle, while Xia Qiu’s blows forced him deeper.
  • Yuchimura used Shave to evade Xia Qiu’s tentacles, then blocked the fish’s bite with his sword and escaped at a distance.
  • Yuchimura severed one of Xia Qiu’s tentacles and cut another, but Xia Qiu pressed down and trapped Yuchimura’s lower body with his tentacles.
  • Yuchimura cut himself free and escaped past Xia Qiu’s pectoral fin, but Xia Qiu swam to the surface and faced him as he struggled with injuries and a lack of air.

Ch. 66Ready

Xia Qiu killed and ate Commodore Yuchimura underwater, then grew stronger and decided he was ready to travel to the Grand Line. Smoker and Will searched for Yuchimura and began planning a hunt for the sea fish that had taken him.

  • Xia Qiu overwhelmed Yuchimura underwater, killed him, and swallowed him before leaving the warship behind.
  • Xia Qiu reunited with Moo near Loguetown and absorbed the powerful energy gained from eating Yuchimura, increasing his strength and speed.
  • Xia Qiu judged that he could now defeat ordinary large sea creatures and set his sights on traveling to the Grand Line.
  • Smoker searched the waters with divers, concluded that Yuchimura had likely died, and told Will he would arrange bait, explosives, and poison to hunt Xia Qiu.
  • Smoker said he would request support from Marine Headquarters if the hunt failed, while Will agreed to keep the damaged warship in Loguetown.

Ch. 67Departure

Six months after Arlong's death, Nami grew restless with village life while Xia Qiu and Moo traveled toward Reverse Mountain. The pair escaped Sea Kings in the Calm Belt and reached the stormy waters near the lighthouse and Reverse Mountain.

  • Hachi defeated Marcel in a sparring match and explained that his new, lighter swords had improved his fighting style.
  • Nami reflected on the peaceful life in Cocoyasi Village and wished to go back to sea to draw nautical charts.
  • Xia Qiu and Moo swam toward Reverse Mountain, and Xia Qiu detected the currents slowing as they neared the Calm Belt.
  • Xia Qiu stopped Moo from entering the Calm Belt, and they fled as Sea Kings rose from the depths and pursued them.
  • Xia Qiu and Moo escaped into the East China Sea, then surfaced and spotted the lighthouse and Reverse Mountain through the storm.

Ch. 68Forward

Xia Qiu and Moo crossed Reverse Mountain and reached Twin Cape, where Moo accidentally injured Laboon and was nearly pulled into the whale’s mouth. Xia Qiu saved him, and the two rested safely away from Laboon.

  • Xia Qiu and Moo tried to swim up Reverse Mountain’s waterway, and Xia Qiu waited at the summit for Moo to catch up.
  • Moo crashed into Xia Qiu at the summit, and the current swept them down toward the sea below.
  • Xia Qiu spotted Laboon and tried to steer clear, but Moo pierced the whale with his horns.
  • As Laboon submerged and sucked in seawater, Xia Qiu pushed Moo against the pull until Laboon closed his mouth and the two escaped.
  • Xia Qiu rested while Moo nudged him mournfully, and Xia Qiu gently patted him.

Ch. 69Unfathomable Sea Domain

Xia Qiu navigated the Grand Line by sensing its chaotic magnetic fields and chose a strong route area as a future hunting ground. After Moo killed a giant filefish and they ate, Xia Qiu detected five more large fish approaching the blood and charged to defend their food.

  • Xia Qiu assessed the Grand Line’s magnetic fields and currents, then followed a broad magnetic range that he suspected marked one of the seven route entrances.
  • Xia Qiu discovered that the noisy, turbulent waters weakened his sound-wave detection and caused him to underestimate the size of a giant filefish.
  • Moo chased down and killed the filefish, then brought it back and let Xia Qiu eat first.
  • Xia Qiu noticed that the filefish’s meat provided a stronger surge of Evolution Energy than East China Sea prey and realized his growth could accelerate in the Grand Line.
  • Xia Qiu detected five fish converging on the bloodied carcass and charged toward them to protect the food.

Ch. 70Spiritual Maneuvers

Xia Qiu tested how distance affected his sound-wave signals while fighting several sea fish, including a killer whale. After defeating the killer whale and reuniting with Moo, he sensed more fish gathering and led them away.

  • Xia Qiu attacked sea fish to study the differences between their signal feedback and actual distance, refining his understanding of sound-wave detection.
  • Xia Qiu disabled a pomfret and killed another fish, then hurried toward Moo when the remaining fish approached him.
  • Moo charged the sea bass while Xia Qiu used an Offensive Roll and Right Sharp Turn to evade and fatally strike the killer whale.
  • Moo killed the sea bass, and he and Xia Qiu reunited as more sea fish gathered around them.
  • Xia Qiu swam toward a gap with Moo following, leaving the gathering fish behind.

Ch. 71I Need an Explanation

Xia Qiu and Moo reached a magnetically strong island, where a giant squid attacked them. Xia Qiu used Moo as bait to kill it, leaving Moo demanding an explanation before deciding to eat.

  • Xia Qiu considered how to improve his attacks against large sea creatures and worked to restore his sonic scouting ability.
  • Xia Qiu followed the magnetic pull to a towering island whose magnetism was stronger than any he had found in the East China Sea.
  • Xia Qiu detected a giant squid and stopped as it approached, then suddenly swam away and left Moo in its grasp.
  • The squid wrapped Moo in its arms, but Xia Qiu circled back and killed it with three bites to the head.
  • Moo realized Xia Qiu had used him as bait, demanded an explanation, then gave up and joined Xia Qiu in eating the squid.

Ch. 72Sea Snakes

Xia Qiu investigated an island whose harbor emitted an unbearable odor and discovered sea snakes living in caves on the island’s far side. After escaping their attack, he ate several snakes and waited to see whether their venom would harm him, hoping to gain resistance and eventually evolve venom glands and fangs.

  • Xia Qiu found that the island’s ships produced an odor that repelled marine creatures, then circled to the island’s far side where the smell was faint.
  • Xia Qiu detected creatures near underwater caves, and a swarm of sea snakes emerged and attacked him.
  • Xia Qiu fled from the sea snakes while Moo ran ahead, and he escaped with several snakes clinging to his body.
  • Xia Qiu crushed and killed the snakes with his arms, then ate them to gain Evolution Energy and test his resistance to their venom.
  • Moo approached Xia Qiu while he waited for the venom’s effects, and Xia Qiu smacked him with his tail.

Ch. 73Goshawk

Xia Qiu tested his resistance to sea snake venom, then began hunting sea snakes to develop a venom gland. After resting, he watched Goshawks hunt near the island and headed toward the Snake Den.

  • Xia Qiu recovered from the venom of six or seven sea snakes and decided to hunt them in controlled quantities to evolve a venom gland.
  • Xia Qiu lured sea snakes into biting his tentacles, strangled them, ate them, and endured the venom for more than three hours as heat gathered around his mouth.
  • Xia Qiu found shelter on the seafloor and rested using alternating brain hemispheres while Moo slept beside him.
  • At dawn, Xia Qiu saw a Goshawk dive into the sea, seize a small sea snake, and carry it back to its mountain nest.
  • Xia Qiu observed the Goshawks hunting smaller sea snakes and then headed toward the Snake Den.

Ch. 74High Jumping in the Toilet

Xia Qiu hunted sea snakes to develop venomous fangs, but the larger snakes began chasing him away. He killed one with Moo’s help, kept it for himself, and made up with Moo by bringing him a fish.

  • Xia Qiu’s teeth began shedding as he hunted sea snakes, and he realized he needed to keep eating them to grow venomous fangs.
  • When the sea snakes stopped sending smaller ones after him, Xia Qiu turned back and bit a large sea snake, then carried it away from the others.
  • Moo helped kill the struggling sea snake, but Xia Qiu guarded the carcass and ate it all himself.
  • Moo sulked after Xia Qiu refused to share, and Xia Qiu swam away before returning with a sea fish for him.
  • Moo accepted the fish and forgave Xia Qiu.

Ch. 75Venom

Xia Qiu tested his venom by killing a huge cod and decided he needed stronger, faster-acting venom and more abilities. On the tenth day near the island, he spotted a lion-themed pirate ship and charged to attack it.

  • Xia Qiu failed to lure a goshawk close enough to catch, then swam off to hunt a cod.
  • Xia Qiu injected the cod with venom, tracked it until it died, and assessed the venom’s potency and delayed effect.
  • Xia Qiu decided to seek more potent venomous snakes, including the sea snakes that pulled Boa Hancock’s ship, while recognizing he needed more abilities to catch them.
  • After waiting near the island for ten days without seeing a pirate ship, Xia Qiu sensed an enormous ship entering the waters.
  • Xia Qiu saw the lion-prowed pirate ship and charged toward it with his eyes protected by their nictitating membranes.

Ch. 76Lionheart Pirates

The Lionheart Pirates reached an island at the start of a Grand Line route, where the villagers prepared to face them and a giant sea fish. When Leon attacked the creature, Xia Qiu killed him with a headbutt.

  • A watchman spotted the Lionheart Pirates’ ship, and the burly old man organized the villagers to hide the elderly and children, lure sea serpents, and ready the cannons.
  • Leon approached the island with his crew and ordered them to prepare for battle.
  • Xia Qiu rammed the Lionheart Pirates’ ship, damaging three compartments, and shrugged off Leon’s harpoon bolt.
  • Leon transformed using the Cat-Cat Fruit, Lion Form, and leaped from the ship to attack Xia Qiu with Lion Hunt.
  • Xia Qiu struck Leon with his ram, breaking his arms and crushing his breastbone; Leon died on the deck.

Ch. 77Devil Fruit

Xia Qiu destroyed Leon’s pirate ship and killed the pirates who tried to escape, then tested whether a dead Devil Fruit user could be eaten safely. Moo ate Leon without gaining an obvious ability, and the chapter ended with Moo swallowing fruit from a drifting crate, including a patterned pear.

  • Xia Qiu repeatedly rammed the pirate ship, sank it, and killed pirates who tried to flee into the sea.
  • White attacked Xia Qiu with a curved blade, but Xia Qiu struck him with a tentacle, crushed him, and swallowed him.
  • Xia Qiu escaped approaching sea snakes with Leon’s body and restrained him for several minutes before bringing him to Moo.
  • Moo ate Leon, and Xia Qiu watched for five minutes before concluding that his method of avoiding a Devil Fruit’s transfer was safe.
  • Moo surfaced to breathe, smashed a drifting crate, and swallowed its fruit, including a patterned pear.

Ch. 78Crisis

After Moo ate the corpse, he transformed into a Blue Lion and lost the strength to move underwater, so Xia Qiu carried him to a secluded island. Moo regained his strength on land, but as a pack of giant wolves surrounded him, a much larger wolf appeared to confront him.

  • Moo transformed into a Blue Lion after eating the fruit, then became powerless and sank underwater.
  • Xia Qiu caught Moo, realized he had become a Devil Fruit user, and carried him toward an isolated island rather than Eagle Snake Island.
  • Xia Qiu pushed Moo ashore, where Moo regained his strength and transformed into a Blue Lion again.
  • Moo and Xia Qiu recognized that Moo could no longer enter the sea without losing strength, and Moo licked Xia Qiu in gratitude.
  • Seven or eight giant gray wolves surrounded Moo, then a twenty-five-meter gray wolf with white fur on its forehead appeared.

Ch. 79Pain and Anger

Xia Qiu watched helplessly as a wolf pack mauled Moo on the shore, and his attempts to intervene with his tentacles failed. When his anger and desperation peaked, Xia Qiu released Conqueror’s Haki, knocking the wolves unconscious and leaving Moo stunned as well.

  • Moo fought the Wolf King and six gray wolves but was wounded as they overwhelmed him.
  • Moo tried to escape to the water, but the Wolf King knocked him down and the pack pinned him.
  • Xia Qiu struck at the wolves with his tentacles, but the Wolf King and another wolf disabled them.
  • As the wolves continued tearing into Moo, Xia Qiu’s anger and guilt surged over his helplessness.
  • Xia Qiu released a strange pressure that knocked the Wolf King and the other wolves unconscious, while Moo also collapsed and twitched.
  • Xia Qiu recognized the power as Conqueror’s Haki.

Ch. 80Danger Lurking Everywhere

Xia Qiu discovered that he possessed Conqueror’s Haki, which knocked Moo and the gray wolves unconscious, but he could not use it again when Moo was in danger. Moo outwitted and killed the wolves, survived a tiger’s arrival, and brought Xia Qiu a gray wolf to eat, leaving Xia Qiu wondering what changes it would bring.

  • Xia Qiu realized he had Conqueror’s Haki and saw that its burst had knocked Moo and the gray wolves unconscious.
  • The Wolf King woke first and approached Moo, but Moo pretended to be helpless, then ambushed and killed it when it attacked.
  • Moo killed the remaining gray wolves, exhausted himself, and thanked Xia Qiu for the force that had saved him.
  • A giant tiger entered the clearing, eyed Moo and the wolf corpses, then dragged away the Wolf King’s body and left.
  • Moo recovered by eating the gray wolves, then carried one to the shore for Xia Qiu, who ate it and wondered what changes it might cause.

Ch. 81Strange Creature

Xia Qiu and Moo survived on the island by sharing food while Xia Qiu’s body slowly began to change. After a storm drove Moo into a cave with the tiger, the tiger helped him catch a deer and followed him to the shore, where she discovered his strange partnership with Xia Qiu.

  • Xia Qiu ate most of the gray wolf carcass, and he and Moo shared what remained until it spoiled.
  • Moo hunted wild boars while Xia Qiu brought fish from the sea, and they continued sharing food for seven or eight days as Xia Qiu felt an itch where his head joined his chest.
  • When a storm struck, Moo sheltered in a cave and spent the night there with the tiger, who recognized him but did not attack.
  • The next morning, Moo chased a deer but could not follow it into a dense forest, so the tiger struck it down and left it before him.
  • Moo let the tiger eat nearly half the deer, then dragged the rest to the shore and fed Xia Qiu, while the tiger watched in confusion.
