Background / History

Jialan was orphaned in infancy and later graduated from the Imperial Magic and Martial Arts School. He privately remembers another world and states that he has lived in his current world for nineteen years. After graduating, he spent two months in the imperial capital before being assigned to the frontier, where he had already served for a year by the time Shadow questioned him about the posting. 2 16

As the sole Mage at Mist Town’s border garrison, Jialan patrolled the Misty Forest, dealt with Magic Beasts, recorded geographical changes, crafted Scrolls, and assisted the camp’s wounded. His role made him a valuable but exposed military asset, prompting Captain Kendy Lawrence to assign guards during dangerous excursions. 5 8 9

Appearance

Jialan is a young Mage who commonly wears a long black cloak and carries his materials in a cloth bag at his waist. In combat and practice, he fights with a rune-carved walnut Staff. 4 16

  • Wears Mage robes or a long black cloak. 4 30
  • Carries a military-issued Spatial Bag at his waist. 4
  • Uses a nearly one-meter walnut Staff engraved with dozens of characters and a faint silvery-white glow. 4
  • His eyes can flash blue when using Mental Power or casting detection spells. 4 20

Personality

Jialan is disciplined and methodical, maintaining daily spell practice, declining wine when concentration is needed, and preparing Scrolls and supplies well before combat. He approaches magic with curiosity, recording experiments on the Little Green Bottle’s liquid and studying formations, ancient languages, and meditation methods. 3 4 31 32 33

In dangerous situations, he prioritizes composure, preparation, and tactical control over direct confrontation. He is also considerate toward ordinary soldiers and mercenaries, rewarding those who assist him, treating injuries, and encouraging a young mercenary to pursue Battle Qi rather than abandon his ambitions. 6 8 29 30

Abilities & Skills

Ice Element Magic

Jialan specializes in Ice Element spells, using cold environments and snow-covered terrain to improve both his training and battlefield control. 4 15 17

  • Ice Cone / Ice Crystal Spear / Spear of Frost — Forms destructive ice projectiles for direct attacks. 4 7 17 49
  • Frost Ray / Ice Ray — Precise offensive rays capable of killing an Ice Leopard, piercing a Rock Armor Bear’s head, and striking the Necromancer’s heart. 7 22 36
  • Ice Mist Technique — Creates dense ice fog that obstructs vision and is particularly effective in forest terrain. 17 24
  • Ring of Ice Seal — An advanced, large-scale evolution of Ice Mist Technique that slows flying Magic Beasts by freezing moisture onto their bodies and feathers. 36 37
  • Ice Seal Trap — Freezes terrain to restrict an opponent’s movement; Jialan used it while hunting an assassin through a snow forest. 14
  • Skating Technique — A mobility spell used during his counter-ambush in the Misty Forest. 17

Defensive Magic

Jialan relies on barriers, Scrolls, and his Staff’s defensive ability to survive attacks from assassins and Magic Beasts.

  • Elemental Shield — His fastest standard defense against elemental damage, though it offers limited protection from physical attacks. 4
  • Frost Shield — A stronger defensive spell that initially requires seven to eight seconds to cast; it can buy critical time but can be broken by powerful attacks. 4 17 26
  • Arrow Protection — Creates a magical barrier against ranged attacks. 28 36
  • Ice Mirror Technique — His Staff’s life-saving ability; produces a mirror that can block fatal damage and reflect attacks. 4
  • Magic Scrolls — Carries defensive and offensive Scrolls for emergencies, including Resist Fire Ring, Frost Shield, Flash, and Lightning Blast Scrolls. 7 11 16 33 44

Mental Power

Jialan possesses unusually pure and powerful Mental Power, which supports his perception, spell control, mental combat, and rapid growth. A Necromancer specifically sought to devour it to advance. 20 22

  • Mental Revelation — Expands his mental perception range and helps reveal stealthy assassins or detect threats inside caves and forests. 4 5 13 36
  • True Sight — Detects hidden or deceptive targets, including an Ice Leopard’s afterimages and an Ancient Elven illusion. 6 26 42
  • Mental Pierce — Condenses Mental Power into an attack that can interrupt an enemy’s innate magic or strike their consciousness. 7 26
  • Mind Guard — Protects his mind from the Dark aura within Shadow Valley. 42
  • Multiple Casting — After studying the Necromancer’s meditation method, Jialan can cast several spells simultaneously, though the technique consumes substantial Mana. 26 42
  • Mental Fusion — Temporarily merged his Mental Power with Qiuqiu’s to resist the Necromancer’s mental attack. 22

Teleportation

Jialan instinctively performed short-range Teleportation to evade a lethal Dark Magic attack, despite the spell normally being associated with Archmages. 22

  • Enables sudden short-distance repositioning for evasion or retreat. 22 28
  • He can cast it only twice at peak condition even after his Mana Pool expansion. 28
  • The spell causes severe Mana expenditure. 22 28

Healing, Potions, and Scrollcraft

Jialan can create magical consumables and provide basic magical healing in addition to combat support.

  • Soothing Rain Spell — Heals injuries, including Katerina’s wounds and those of injured mercenaries. 22 29
  • Nishang Potion — Refined four vials from Nishang Grass in less than half a day. 8
  • Moonlight Potion — Restores Mana in emergencies, though full recovery still takes at least a day. 22
  • Magic Scroll creation — Successfully made a Tier 0 Flash Scroll and later mass-produced Scrolls for the coming war. 3 33
  • His treated plant bark can serve as inexpensive, effective blank-Scroll material in place of difficult-to-obtain Magic Beast hide. 32

Ancient Elven Knowledge

Jialan can read Ancient Elvish and apply Elven magical knowledge to ruins, seals, puzzles, and formations. 12 13 24

  • Deciphered an ancient scroll and uncovered an Opening Incantation for the Ancient Elf Ruins. 13
  • Activated the ruins’ entrance and solved trials involving a star chart, magical formulas, and an Elven poem. 24 25
  • Identified and dispelled an Ancient Elven illusion by noticing flaws in its simulated physical effects. 26
  • Copied a complex magic formation, though he can currently comprehend only part of it. 26 28

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spatial Bag — A military benefit with approximately two cubic meters of storage space, allowing Jialan to retrieve materials, potions, and equipment quickly in battle. 4
  • Walnut Staff — Purchased with most of his savings; increases spell damage by ten percent and contains Ice Mirror Technique. 4
  • Little Green Bottle — A mysterious emerald bottle recovered from a skeleton in the Ancient Elf Ruins. Its liquid is lethally toxic to animals but rapidly accelerates plant growth and improves herb quality. 27 28 32
    • The liquid can mature plants and improve bark used for Scroll-making without observed side effects on treated plants. 31 32
    • The bottle refills gradually only when exposed to external elements rather than stored inside the Spatial Bag. 28 31
    • Jialan keeps its existence secret and used it to force Sun Fruit trees into a berserk state. 32 45
  • Necromancer’s Meditation Method — A technique focused on condensing Mental Power; it improves Jialan’s cultivation speed, recovery, mental resilience, and control. 23 25 26 28
  • Communication Crystal and stealth cloak — Issued for the Shadow Valley materials mission. 40

Relationships

  • Katerina — An Intermediate Peak Assassin and senior graduate of Jialan’s school. She purchased Nishang Grass from him, fought alongside him on later missions, and was healed by his Soothing Rain Spell. 7 8 22
  • Shadow — A Half-elf Archer who guarded Jialan during his breakthrough and became a trusted partner during several ambushes and ruin expeditions. Shadow openly objects to the military wasting Jialan’s talent at the frontier. 15 16 17 24
  • Argyle Capet — A High Light Knight and Traveling Knight from the Capet family. Argyle repeatedly protects Jialan, warns him of the Shadow Valley mission’s hidden danger, and treats him as a trusted ally. 11 40 41 50
  • Anna — A Priest who fights beside Jialan during the fortress siege, saves him from a leader-class flying Magic Beast, and provides specially prepared healing potions before Shadow Valley. 37 41
  • Albert Green — An experienced Earth Mage sent to support Mist Town. Albert supplies Jialan with war resources, praises his preparation, and teaches him battlefield survival. 33 34 49
  • John Marcus — A patrol captain and later squad leader. Jialan works with him during forest patrols, relies on him for protection, and saves him from flying Magic Beasts during the fortress defense. 9 11 49
  • Captain Kendy Lawrence — Commander of Mist Town’s border garrison. Kendy recognizes Jialan’s importance as the camp’s only Spellcaster and is reluctant to risk him unnecessarily. 5 16 31
  • Jack — The border patrol’s physician. Initially nervous around Jialan, Jack becomes more comfortable after caring for Jialan’s feet during the patrol. 8 9
  • Qiuqiu — A small squirrel whose Mental Power fused with Jialan’s to shield him from the Necromancer’s mental assault. 22

Story Role / Major Arcs

Border Mage and Ice Leopard Hunt

Jialan begins as Mist Town’s sole Spellcaster, accepts a mercenary request to hunt an Ice Leopard for Nishang Grass, and uses detection, control, mental attacks, and ice magic to defeat the stronger leopard. The battle greatly increases his Mental Power and brings him close to a breakthrough. 2 5 6 7

Afterward, he refines Nishang Potion for Katerina, claims the Ice Leopard’s Magic Crystal and fur, compensates the soldiers who assisted him, and begins his official border patrol mission. 8

Patrol, Ambushes, and Breakthrough

During the Misty Forest patrol, Jialan records data, gathers spell materials, and grows closer to Jack and John Marcus while noticing an abnormal increase in Magic Beasts. 9

He later survives repeated assassin attacks by using traps, ice terrain, Scrolls, and teamwork with Shadow and John. The ordeal culminates in a minor-realm breakthrough that improves his Ice Element control. 13 14 15 17

Ancient Elf Ruins

Jialan deciphers an Ancient Elven map and Opening Incantation, then leads his companions into the Ancient Elf Ruins to escape pursuit. Separated by a trap, he completes the ruins’ trials alone through linguistic knowledge, mathematics, observation, and resonance with natural elements. 12 13 24 25

Within the ruins, he expands his Mana Pool to at least twice its former capacity, acquires a superior meditation method, learns Teleportation and Arrow Protection, copies an Elven formation, and obtains the Little Green Bottle. 22 23 25 26 27 28

Return to Mist Town and War Preparations

After returning to Mist Town, Jialan studies the Little Green Bottle and discovers that its liquid can rapidly cultivate high-quality plants and Scroll materials. He keeps the bottle secret while preparing large numbers of Scrolls for the approaching conflict. 31 32 33

Mage Albert Green confirms Jialan’s advancement, supplies him with cultivation pills, combat potions, and Scrolls, and trains him in battlefield survival. 33 34

Iron Wall Fortress and Shadow Valley

At Iron Wall Fortress, Jialan helps defend against a Magic Beast siege, coordinating with Mage apprentices and using Ring of Ice Seal to hinder aerial attackers. His cooperation with Anna secures the wall, but the absence of the fortress’s official Mages deepens his suspicion that the defenders are being used for a hidden purpose. 36 37

Jialan joins Argyle’s Shadow Valley mission to collect Star Brilliance Grass, Shadow Crystal, and Sun Fruit despite warnings that the military has concealed the mission’s true purpose. There, he uses Multiple Casting and detection magic to navigate traps and Dark influence. 40 41 42

Sun Fruit Crisis and Fortress Defense

During the conflict around the spatial rift, Jialan secretly applies the Little Green Bottle’s liquid to a Sun Fruit tree, driving the trees berserk and disrupting both sides’ plans. 44 45

After the rift’s instability contributes to a Beast Tide, Jialan returns to the fortress with Argyle and Albert. He saves John Marcus, defends the eastern wall against corrupted Magic Beasts, and identifies that the Beast Tide appears drawn toward something inside the fortress rather than attacking randomly. 48 49 50
