Background / History

Xiao Yan was born into the Xiao Family of Wutan City. His mother, Gu Yan, was secretly planted in the family by the Ancient Clan to obtain the Tuoshe Ancient Emperor Jade; she died of illness while Xiao Yan was still young. After her death, he asked Fu Ye to accept him as a disciple, but Fu Ye refused, saying that discipleship depended on fate 652 654.

At four, Xiao Yan condensed his Qi Vortex and began cultivating. By eleven, he became a one-star Dou Zhe, earning recognition as Wutan City's outstanding young genius 657 659. His progress later collapsed as his Dou Qi continuously vanished. He endured ridicule after falling to the seventh stage of Dou Qi, but refused his father's offer to seek Fu Ye's intervention and resolved to recover through his own efforts 660.

His engagement to Nalan Yanran became the source of the Three-Year Agreement. Despite being far weaker at the time, Xiao Yan accepted her challenge rather than surrender his dignity 663. During his recovery, Yao Chen became his teacher, guiding his cultivation, alchemy, and eventual search for heavenly flames. Xiao Yan is fiercely loyal to Yao Chen.
