Peter was honestly cleaning the church. Just as Matt had said, the little chapel was old and run-down, and many places looked like they had not been repaired in twenty or thirty years. There were few visitors, too. Peter had been cleaning inside for an hour or two without seeing a single worshipper come in.
"Even if it isn't Sunday, this still feels strange. According to you, this is Hell's Kitchen's only church, right? If it's the only church, shouldn't there be plenty of people? Don't the people of Hell's Kitchen believe in Christianity? Are they all heathens?"
Peter asked Matt while holding a broom. The priest himself was cleaning another room. Upon hearing Peter's question, Matt simply answered calmly.
"This isn't Hell's Kitchen's only church. It's Hell's Kitchen's only white Protestant church. There are quite a few Black priests in Hell's Kitchen, and their churches get a fair number of visitors. Of course, the bigger reason is that no one ever imagined Hell's Kitchen would have a white church."
After saying that, Matt added half-jokingly, "Actually, the priest himself said he hoped everyone would just think of him as Black. He doesn't care about the skin color of those attending Mass, but unfortunately, other people do."
