Background / History
Years before her reunion with Ning Chang'an, Lin Ying was gathering medicinal herbs in a remote mountain forest when she discovered the badly injured Chang'an hiding in a tree near her bathing pool. Believing he had been spying on her, she knocked him down and injured him further; upon discovering that his internal organs and meridians were already badly damaged, she treated him with herbs instead. She fed him medicine and stayed nearby until he could recover, then departed without leaving a way to find her. 45
Ning Chang'an later encountered Lin Ying at Yang Manor while acting under the masked identity of Soul Severing. Despite his altered appearance and clothing, she recognized him immediately, explaining that she could identify people she hated even if they “turned to ash.” Chang'an apologized for their earlier encounter and agreed to make amends under terms she would set. 44
Lin Ying accepted his offer by hiring him as her bodyguard for one month. She required him to obey her instructions, handle any trouble that arose, and keep his true identity secret. 46
She subsequently brought him into Lin Manor, where he was installed in the west wing and given the servant identity Laifu. Lin Ying used a human-skin mask, cosmetics, white hair, and eye powder to transform him into an elderly butler capable of accompanying her without attracting suspicion. 48 49 50
Disguised as mistress and servant, Lin Ying and “Laifu” attended a gathering at Wuchang Residence hosted by Tang Yinzheng, the Third Prince of the Great Gan Dynasty. Tang personally welcomed her as the eldest daughter of Lin Manor and asked after her father. 50
Appearance
Lin Ying is a poised young woman with a cool, refined bearing. During her meeting with Soul Severing, she wore a fitted purple robe and sat casually on a roof ridge while drinking from a wine jar. 44
- Long black hair that falls down her back when loosened. 44
- Slender raised eyebrows and large eyes. 44
- Long, fair fingers. 44
- Maintains a composed, elegant public appearance as the daughter of Lin Manor. 50
Personality
Lin Ying is calm, self-assured, and difficult to intimidate. Her resentment toward Ning Chang'an remains restrained rather than explosive; even while recognizing him as someone she hates, she allows him an opportunity to make amends. 44
She is compassionate but not easily fooled. Although she understood that Chang'an was concealing the truth about their first meeting, she still treated his severe injuries with medicinal herbs. 45 Her kindness is balanced by a willful, imperious streak: she expects Chang'an to follow her cover identity rules precisely and deliberately gives him the unflattering servant name “Laifu.” 46 49
Lin Ying is highly observant. She recognized Chang'an through a disguise and later noticed his slight weight loss after his cultivation session, even though the change was nearly imperceptible. 44 49
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts and Internal Energy
Lin Ying possesses considerable martial ability and internal energy.
- Her kick left the already wounded Chang'an coughing blood and suffering violent internal pain. 45
- She can propel a wine jar through the air in a controlled, slow path, as though an invisible hand were carrying it to its target. Chang'an recognized this as a display of extremely strong internal energy. 46
Herbal Medicine
Lin Ying is knowledgeable in medicinal herbs and emergency treatment.
- She gathered herbal and woody medicinal materials alone in the mountains. 45
- After examining Chang'an's injuries, she ground numerous ingredients in a specific ratio and administered the medicine to him. 45
- She restricted his diet to wild berries rather than roasted meat, judging oily food unsuitable for his condition. 45
Disguise and Makeup
Lin Ying is skilled at constructing convincing false identities.
- She supplied Ning Chang'an with a human-skin mask for his servant disguise. 49
- She personally applied the mask and used cosmetics, false hair, facial detailing, and a beard to turn him into an elderly butler. 50
- She used powder to make his eyes appear cloudy and lifeless, completing the appearance of an aging servant; the effect was expected to last three to five days. 50
