Background / History
Guo Jing and his sworn brother Qiao Feng defended Great Victory Pass against Later Jin for sixteen years, repeatedly halting its expansion despite lacking formal imperial appointments. Their leadership later made them the de facto prefectural governors of Xiangyang after the original official fled the city. 58 68
As a youth, Guo Jing received instruction in the Quanzhen Heart Sutra from Ma Yu of the Quanzhen Sect. He remained deeply grateful to the sect and publicly acknowledged that debt during the Heroes Gathering. 72
While traveling on Zhongnan Mountain, Guo Jing intervened when bandits targeted Xiao Xian. Discovering that Xiao Xian had concealed overwhelming martial ability, Guo Jing nevertheless earned his respect through his willingness to help a stranger. 59
Guo Jing had traveled to Zhongnan Mountain to place Yang Guo under the Quanzhen Sect’s protection. With border warfare demanding his full attention, he sought a stable future for his deceased sworn brother’s descendant should the country fall into greater chaos. 59
Personality
Guo Jing is chivalrous, compassionate, and strongly devoted to the country and its people. He intervenes against wrongdoing even when it is not his responsibility, treats wounded martial artists at Xiangyang’s expense, and shoulders military burdens without official authority. 59 68 70
He is modest about his fame, though privately pleased by the title “Divine Dragon Hero.” Beneath an outwardly honest and somewhat foolish appearance, he is perceptive and shrewd; however, his rigid upbringing leaves him highly concerned with etiquette, reputation, and proper seniority. 59 60 61
As a commander, Guo Jing is conscientious to the point of self-reproach. He feels responsible for the losses suffered by allied martial artists and initially struggles with the practical burden of managing Later Jin prisoners after Xiangyang’s victory. 69 90 95
Abilities & Skills
Peak Great Grandmaster Cultivation
Guo Jing is a Peak Great Grandmaster Realm martial artist, placing him among the strongest figures in the martial world and allowing him to contend directly with Later Jin’s peak expert Ao Bai. He is considered capable of breaking through to the Celestial Realm at any time. 65 66
- Ranked eighth on Great Xia’s Heavenly Ranking, a court-issued list of the twenty strongest Great Grandmaster experts. 92
- His true-qi cultivation is exceptionally powerful, but prolonged use of his strongest techniques can exhaust him. 79 80 85
- He was one of only two Xiangyang defenders able to directly contend with Ao Bai. 66
Dragon Subduing Eighteen Palms
Guo Jing’s signature palm art is the Dragon Subduing Eighteen Palms, the basis of his “Divine Dragon Hero” title. Its force manifests as dragon-shaped true qi in battle. 59 79
- Dragon Regrets — described as the palm art’s strongest move. 79
- Dragon Battles in the Wild — a fierce, life-or-death technique intended to overwhelm an opponent through direct confrontation. 79
- Flying Dragon in the Sky — used in conjunction with his lightness skill to attack from the air. 80
- His understanding of yin and yang allows him to employ palm techniques that combine hardness and softness. 85
- Its primary limitation is extreme true-qi consumption when used at full power. 85
Nine Yin Manual
Guo Jing possesses the Nine Yin Manual, whose principles complement the Dragon Subduing Eighteen Palms and deepen his grasp of yin-yang transformation. 85
- Enables him to interpret and vary his palm force beyond straightforward hard-style attacks. 85
- Works in concert with the Dragon Subduing Eighteen Palms rather than replacing it. 85
Golden Goose Skill
Guo Jing uses the Golden Goose Skill as his principal lightness technique. 79 80
- Allows him to evade Ao Bai’s heavy strikes rather than confront their brute force directly. 79
- Lets him rise and maneuver through the air during combat. 80
Military Strategy and Leadership
Guo Jing is an accomplished commander whose strategic ability surpassed Qiao Feng’s in the selection for Martial Arts Alliance Chief. 74
- Convened the Heroes Gathering and established its nomination, martial contest, and strategy contest procedures. 73
- Won the position of Martial Arts Alliance Chief through martial strength, strategy, and political support. 74
- Planned operations against the four cities surrounding Xiangyang to break Later Jin’s blockade and relieve the city’s supply crisis. 74 75
- Ordered the pursuit of retreating Later Jin forces toward First Line Gorge after Xiangyang’s victory. 89
Relationships
- Qiao Feng — Sworn brother and fellow defender of Great Victory Pass and Xiangyang. Though Qiao Feng is slightly stronger in direct combat, he yielded the Martial Arts Alliance Chief position because Guo Jing was the superior strategist. 58 74
- Huang Rong — Wife and closest strategic confidante. Her arrangements for Quanzhen Sect and Salt Gang reinforcements substantially strengthen Xiangyang’s defense, while her counsel helps Guo Jing handle wartime decisions. 69 90
- Yang Guo — Nephew under Guo Jing’s guardianship. Guo Jing tries to secure Yang Guo’s future through the Quanzhen Sect and initially refuses Xiao Xian’s priceless manual out of concern for propriety and reputation. 59 60 61
- Xiao Xian — Friend whom Guo Jing first meets while intervening against bandits. Guo Jing respects Xiao Xian’s unfathomable strength, thanks him for covert aid during the Battle of Xiangyang, and values their friendship despite their vast difference in cultivation. 59 70 72 92
- Quanzhen Sect — Guo Jing’s former sect and a long-standing source of personal gratitude. He seeks its protection for Yang Guo and later relies on its support during the Xiangyang crisis. 59 69 72
- Ao Bai — Later Jin’s Peak Great Grandmaster champion and Guo Jing’s principal opponent during the Battle of Xiangyang. Their duel devastates the battlefield and remains closely contested for much of the battle. 79 80 82
- Zhang Sanfeng — Senior martial artist whom Guo Jing visits at Wudang to apologize for the sect’s losses during the war. Zhang Sanfeng does not blame Guo Jing for the casualties. 95
