Background / History
Pan-Universe Entertainment originated as a group of interstellar pirates. Following an unspecified accident, it became an entertainment company whose survival and pleasure depended on manipulating civilizations across worlds. 597
Its invasion of Origin Star ended that planet’s independent development. Using a single spaceship, the company disrupted the civilization’s technological foundations; within three months, the climate changed, plants and animals mutated, and disasters made resistance futile. 82 Over the following two centuries, Origin Star became a controlled source of Alien Warriors rather than a civilization capable of opposing its occupier. 127
The company’s core product is the Alien Battlefield: real worlds into which selected warriors are sent through Body Snatching. The warriors’ conflicts are broadcast for audiences, who can reward favored participants with Mental Power. 425 Battlefields also function as reconnaissance and advance operations for future expansion; the multiverse battlefield was explicitly treated as both entertainment and a prelude to war by the civilization behind the company. 597
Operations
Alien Battlefield Management
- Selects and deploys Alien Warriors into inhabited worlds, assigning Keywords that grant access to rule-like powers and derived skills. 556
- Alters battlefield rules, participant counts, resources, rankings, and Keyword assignments to manufacture drama or restrict dominant contestants. 379 450 555
- Uses audience support and gambling activity as major drivers of production decisions; Dug’s popularity repeatedly prompted the company to redesign matches around him. 425 527
- Monitors Alien Warriors through their perspectives and maintains a backdoor program connected to their souls. 376 628
- Can forcibly terminate a battlefield and recall participants when their continued presence threatens the intended outcome. 445
Harvesting and Simulation Arenas
- After a battlefield ends, company personnel can occupy Alien Warrior bodies and clear remaining powerful inhabitants. 445 447
- Harvests souls from conquered worlds on a massive scale, leaving most worlds nearly depopulated while preserving their knowledge systems for later use. 448
- Seals harvested souls’ memories and repurposes them as Simulation Arena NPCs, effectively turning real civilizations into repeatable entertainment scenarios. 448 637
- Restores and deploys former Simulation Arena bosses as Alien Warriors when ordinary contestants are no longer sufficient competition. 595
Body Snatching and Soul Projection
- Its personnel use enormous Mental Power to envelop, extract, and restrain souls. 447
- Company operatives generally act through bodies refined by Alien Warriors, using the skills already awakened by those bodies. 448 596
- Dug concludes that this reliance on projected souls and borrowed bodies may indicate that Pan-Universe personnel cannot directly wield Keyword laws on their own. 511 596
- When Dug could no longer be recalled normally, the company attempted to seize his body through high-Mental-Power Body Snatching. 648 649
