Background / History
Dugu Bo devoted himself to poison arts from his youth. By the time Shrek visits Sunset Forest, he has been an imperial enshrined guest for over a decade. His seizure of territory with Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison reportedly killed more than ten thousand Soul Beasts, including many ten-thousand-year specimens. The resulting barrier displaced older Soul Beasts toward the forest’s outskirts, requiring intervention ordered by Emperor Xue Ye 107 420.
He controlled the medicinal garden surrounding the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, but did not fully understand the value of its immortal herbs until Zhuge Lan gave him the Immortal Herb Encyclopedia. Despite his expertise, Dugu Bo had suffered from his own snake venom for most of his life 114 123.
Red Crystal Flower Story
In Sunset Valley, Dugu Bo tells Zhuge Lan about a servant boy and a noble girl from Odin City. The girl was killed by a nobleman’s son after refusing to marry him. The boy subsequently awakened his martial soul, burned the household, recovered the girl’s body, and planted Red Crystal Flowers. Dugu Bo’s tears lead Zhuge Lan to suspect that the boy was Dugu Bo himself; the passage does not explicitly confirm that identification 568.
Appearance
Dugu Bo is commonly recognized by his long green hair, stern face, and penetrating eyes. His appearance is not consistent across every scene: he is described as elderly during his street discussion of poisons, while his Dance King Competition appearance emphasizes the youthful body and noble bearing associated with the Titled Douluo realm 334 476 520.
- Green clothing: Wears green robes, contributing to Zhuge Lan’s nickname “Old Leek” 115 128.
- Changing hair color: His hair turns white from the roots while he refines accumulated snake venom 123.
- Public-stage appearance: Presents a gentle smile and a handsome, somber-looking face that surprises spectators expecting a sinister poison master 334 358.
- Post-advancement coloration: After reaching Rank 98, the green light surrounding his body gains a purple tint 720.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud, volatile, and quick to answer disrespect with violence. He rejects Tang San’s attempt to bargain over his poisoning by grabbing him by the throat, and later nearly kills him over an embarrassing misunderstanding during preparation for body refining. His reputation describes someone who follows his own likes and dislikes rather than established rules 113 127 334.
His pride does not prevent him from recognizing an unwinnable position. He yields to Zhuge Lan’s Medicine God display and accepts instruction when the benefits become clear. Nevertheless, difficulty cultivating the Five Venoms Divine Palm makes him reluctant to ask Zhuge Lan for help, and he redirects his frustration toward Yu Tianheng 114 221.
He is affectionate toward Dugu Yan, but his ambition complicates that protectiveness. He initially presses her to associate romantically with Zhuge Lan partly for the resources and advancement it could bring him. Later, concern about the continent’s instability gives his encouragement a more practical focus on her strength and survival 220 221 282.
Dugu Bo enjoys praise, treasures, and opportunities to show off. His unwanted reputation as an excellent teacher initially enrages him, yet he later becomes interested in cultivating fan groups. With Ouyang Zi, he shows a patient, fatherly side and repeatedly insists that poison must not harm innocent people 261 386 417 420 478.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor
His beast martial soul combines powerful venom with the size and physical strength of a giant serpent 128 568.
- Original Avatar: His Seventh Soul Skill produces a jade-green serpent approximately thirty meters long and as thick as a water vat 128.
- Containment: Coils around Zhuge Lan’s alchemy furnace and contains its explosive shockwave, nearly exhausting his Soul Power 128.
- Dragon mutation: At Rank 98, the martial soul develops horns, purple coloration, and a dragon-like roar 720.
- Collateral damage: A subsequent Avatar manifestation crushes houses, while its roar and gusts destroy additional buildings 721.
- Bloodline suppression: Before the later mutation, the Ice Dragon Armor Beast’s dragon might sharply weakens his martial soul’s aura. He also recognizes suppression from the World Serpent Dragon’s Golden Dragon and Liu Erlong’s evolved martial soul 140 295.
Documented Soul Skills
| Soul Skill | Effect / Application |
|---|---|
| First Soul Skill: Poisonous Liquid | The mutated Serpent Emperor spits deep-purple poison resembling dragon breath 721. |
| Third Soul Skill: Poison Mist Covers the Sky | Releases dark-green mist that merges with seawater and corrodes even the Deep Blue Water Prison’s barrier 723. |
| Sixth Soul Skill: Duman | Used against Fish Douluo during the underwater battle 723. |
| Seventh Soul Skill: Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor Avatar | Transforms Dugu Bo into his giant serpent Avatar; used to contain the alchemy furnace explosion 128. |

| Unnamed substitute soul skill | Saves him from a nearly fatal Soul Beast attack, with a temporary reduction to Soul Douluo strength 698. |
Poison Arts
Dugu Bo studies poisonous creatures, plants, recipes, and antidotes. His knowledge includes distinctions between different toxins and rare substances such as Frozen Sunset 519 520 521.
- Territorial barriers: Uses Jade Phosphorous Serpent Poison to isolate a large section of Sunset Forest 107.
- Capture: Incapacitates two twenty-thousand-year Black Panthers with poison and later subdues a thousand-year Red Arrow Frog with blue poisonous mist 130 570.
- Controlled demonstrations: Briefly exposes a skeptical crowd to poisonous mist without adding Soul Power, then withdraws it before it can fatally damage them 521.
- Environmental cleanup: Absorbs residual poison from Ouyang Zi’s defeated Sang Lei Sheep to prevent further harm 424.
- Poison consumption: Uses poisonous substances to strengthen himself; sufficiently potent pills can heal injuries and evolve his internal toxins 720.
- Underwater limits: Fish Douluo’s adaptations initially counter his poisoning attempts, forcing him to seek Zhuge Lan’s help. Increasing the water’s toxicity nevertheless begins to threaten Fish Douluo’s stamina and bodily functions 723.
Five Venoms Divine Palm
The technique turns Dugu Bo’s self-poisoning problem into a cultivation resource. Its first level combines poison cultivation with internal-force control, allowing him to refine venom into Soul Power and develop a self-created offensive skill 113 123.
- Immediate benefit: Removes the need to simply purge the snake venom ravaging his body 113.
- Clan significance: Dugu Bo believes it can free the Biphosphorus Snake Clan from having to choose between cultivation and survival 123.
- Material requirement: Its strongest form requires five highly toxic substances that mutually generate and restrain one another; five variants of snake venom would not maximize its power 122.
- Cultivation obstacle: Gathering five Titled Douluo-level poisons proves a major barrier, keeping him dependent on Zhuge Lan’s assistance 221 258 261.
Reconnaissance & Tactical Judgment
Dugu Bo combines poison, coercion, concealment, and experience to investigate enemy forces 572 573 585.
- Uses venomous snakes to intimidate a captured Spirit Hall soul master into revealing troop numbers 572 573.
- Infiltrates the First and Fifth Fortresses, identifying Fei Yu as the former’s commander and Lone Wolf Douluo as the latter’s Titled Douluo 585.
- Conceals his aura when he detects a presence resembling Ghost Douluo inside the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 585.
- Marks a Golden Light Beast and follows it into the Star Dou Great Forest 695.
- Warns Zhuge Lan that political allies may isolate and capture him rather than remain firmly on his side 579.
Teaching & Alchemy
His teaching methods range from punitive training to patient instruction 259 423.
- Yu Tianheng: Harsh training produces rapid cultivation gains, earning Dugu Bo the reputation of a “Gold Medal Teacher” despite his original retaliatory motive 259.
- Mental conditioning: Forces Yu Tianheng to wear a flashy outfit and stand publicly in the academy square to endure ridicule 310.
- Ouyang Zi: Explains poisonous herbs, answers questions, and uses practical Soul Beast encounters to teach combat judgment 423 424.
- Alchemy: Supplies Soul Power and contains the furnace during Zhuge Lan’s pill refinement; later teaches Ouyang Zi alchemy 127 128 478.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well
Tang San tries to negotiate a cure for Dugu Bo’s poisoning, but Dugu Bo forces him and his companions to accompany him to the medicinal valley. There they encounter Zhuge Lan, who claims the garden and compels Dugu Bo to kneel through a Medicine God phantom. The Five Venoms Divine Palm and Immortal Herb Encyclopedia turn the confrontation into reluctant cooperation 113 114.
Dugu Bo subsequently assists with pill refinement, contains the furnace explosion, and reaches Rank 92. He then captures the Black Panthers needed for Zhu Zhuqing’s consecutive soul-ring absorptions 127 128 130.
Reluctant Gold Medal Teacher
After failing to persuade Dugu Yan to join Zhuge Lan’s camp, Dugu Bo vents his frustration through Yu Tianheng’s training. The unexpectedly strong results earn public praise that he initially considers humiliating. Zhuge Lan uses that reputation to recruit him and later promotes him as a kindly teacher during the Dance King Competition 220 221 259 261 262 264 335.
Dugu Bo arranges dance instruction for Yan, openly supports her performance, and eventually asks Zhuge Lan how to expand his own fan groups 283 358 386.
Speed Clan and Xiao Zi
Dugu Bo overwhelms Spirit Hall’s Branch Hall Master in retaliation for an old humiliation and is celebrated by the Speed Clan afterward. At the banquet, he accepts Xiao Zi as a disciple and begins teaching responsible poison use through practical training 415 417 420 423 424.
He also agrees to protect the clan’s younger competitors, while explicitly warning that he cannot guarantee everyone’s safety across an entire forest 439.
Spirit Hall Journey and Sect Defense
Despite warning that Spirit Hall is too dangerous to approach carelessly, Dugu Bo accompanies Zhuge Lan on a rescue mission. He says farewell to Xiao Zi before leaving and repeatedly urges Zhuge Lan to retreat rather than recklessly risk his life 477 478.
During their travels, he pursues the ingredients of Spirit Hall’s poison formula and receives the Chaos Poison Pill that raises him to Rank 94. He then assists Zhuge Lan in entering the besieged Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect and investigating enemy fortresses 529 530 559 568 573 574 585.
Star Dou Great Forest and Rank 98
While tracking Golden Light Beasts, Dugu Bo encounters a Soul Beast powerful enough to nearly kill him with one attack. His substitute skill preserves his life, but leaves him temporarily reduced to Soul Douluo strength 695 698.
A later poison pill restores his injuries, evolves his venom and martial soul, and raises him to Rank 98. Eager to prove his strength, he volunteers to defeat the remaining enemy Titled Douluo alone. Fish Douluo’s underwater adaptations undermine that confidence, and Dugu Bo ultimately asks Zhuge Lan for assistance 720 721 723.
