The rabbits, beheaded and skinned, neither cried nor struggled. One snow-white carcass surfaced and vanished in the boiling water, carrying the fragrance of scallions and sauce. The other was roasting over the fire until golden and crisp, enough to make anyone drool just looking at it.

Having stewed a pot of rabbit soup and grilled rabbit meat, Fang Zheng was clearly overflowing with accomplishment.

He had always enjoyed cooking. He still remembered how, when he was little and visiting his grandmother in the countryside, Fang Zheng had loved killing chickens most of all. He would pin down the desperately struggling chicken, hang it upside down, and slit its throat with a knife.
