Background / History

Loguetown investigation

Smoker attended the Marine Headquarters review of the Arlong Pirates’ destruction and requested a transfer to Loguetown. Convinced that Major Luo Ya had concealed a ruthless scheme behind the operation and Commodore Murak’s death, he intended to uncover Luo Ya’s true motives. 70

Headquarters assigned him to the Loguetown Branch nominally as Luo Ya’s subordinate, while expecting him to investigate the incident and replace Luo Ya if evidence warranted it. 71

Smoker confronted Luo Ya immediately upon arriving and was unsettled when Luo Ya openly admitted to orchestrating the purge of Murak and the corrupt officers. After hearing that Murak had been targeted for crimes against civilians rather than for obstructing Luo Ya, Smoker accepted that their commitment to justice was fundamentally similar and formally reported for duty. 74

Rivalry and self-improvement

Despite respecting Luo Ya’s principles, Smoker refused to accept being subordinate to someone he considered weaker. Luo Ya’s return from training—and revelation that his Doriki had reached roughly 900—intensified Smoker’s competitive drive. 105

In their beach spar, Luo Ya defeated Smoker with superior physical ability and Haki, criticizing Smoker’s stagnant growth and unimaginative Smoke Fruit usage. The defeat left Smoker shaken, but it also drove him to begin serious physical and ability training. 106 107

As Luo Ya’s influence grew, Smoker became one of his most dependable officers. He was horrified by CP0’s attempt to assassinate Luo Ya and began questioning whether the Marines and World Government still represented justice. 177

His commitment to justice is genuine but pragmatic. Although Luo Ya’s methods disturbed him at first, Smoker came to respect the willingness to remove corrupt Marines who harmed civilians.
