Background

Ace grew up alongside Luffy and feared Vice Admiral Garp’s return with him at Windmill Village. Garp calls Ace his grandson, and the two share a combative but familiar bond 47 50.

Before becoming a pirate, Ace fought Luo Ya in a confined five-meter circle for an entire day and night. Their physical ability was initially closely matched, but Luo Ya’s Haki awakening allowed him to gain the upper hand the following day 50 51. When Luo Ya later left the area, Ace promised that they would meet again after he became “a free pirate” 52.

Ace eventually formed and led the Spade Pirates. By the time he entered the New World, he had gained fame as “Fire Fist” Ace, a Logia user who actively sought battles with powerful pirates 143.

Personality

Ace is reckless, proud, and intensely competitive. He repeatedly seeks out stronger opponents—including Kaido, Whitebeard, Shanks, and Wang Zhi—regardless of the danger or the gap in power 147 153 158 308.

His impulsiveness is balanced by genuine compassion. He chooses to investigate a distress call despite recognizing that it could be a trap, because someone may truly need help 143. This warmth is also why the Spade Pirates remain devoted to him.

Defeat affects Ace deeply. After losing to Yamato and later suffering the deaths of many Spade Pirates, he falls into self-doubt and grief; however, he refuses to surrender permanently and rebuilds his resolve through training 155 310 312.

Appearance

Ace is commonly associated with flames due to his Flame-Flame Fruit, which allows his body to transform into fire during battle. After his rematch with Wang Zhi, his flames burn blue-white, visibly hotter and more intense than before 145 314.

As captain of the Spade Pirates, Ace gains rapid fame in the New World by defeating established pirates and pursuing strong opponents. Whitebeard recognizes both his potential and his lineage as Roger’s son 143.

Marine Pursuit and Shichibukai Offer
