Background / History

The Chen Family is an aristocratic clan with a history longer than the Izumo Empire and has been the empire's foremost family for roughly three centuries. Its base is Anyang City in Yanling County, where its estate is comparable in size to the imperial palace. The clan's longstanding influence in poison arts has earned it support among local sects and families beyond that held by the Izumo royal house. 184 188

Before Chen Cheng's return, Family Head Chen Yuan had abandoned ambitions of overthrowing the Izumo Empire because he had no heir. Chen Cheng's identification as his only son revived those ambitions; Chen Yuan subsequently named him Young Family Head and declared that his commands carried the Family Head's authority. 5 6 18

The family initially operated as a powerful regional force beyond effective imperial control. Its strength, wealth from the Murong Family, and military forces under King Yanling gave it the means to overthrow the Izumo Empire even before its later expansion. 10
