Background / History

Feng Ruoxue is a daughter of the Izumo Emperor and was sent to Anyang City under escort for a political marriage alliance with Chen Cheng. The journey demonstrates the diminished authority of the Izumo royal house: the Chen Family's Black Armor Guards overwhelm her escort and inspect her party without treating her position as decisive. 29 30

She understands that the Chen Family's influence far exceeds that of her declining family, so she restrains Hong Luan after the maid challenges Chen Cheng. Though alarmed by Chen Cheng's treatment of her attendant, Ruoxue personally tends Hong Luan's injuries with a second-grade healing pill. 30 31

While left waiting in Anyang City, Ruoxue and Hong Luan disguise themselves as men to explore the city. At Qinglan Teahouse, Hong Luan's boasting triggers a dispute over zither music; Ruoxue apologizes to calm the crowd, then performs her own composition, “Linjiang Rhapsody.” The melody expresses her loneliness and resignation toward an arranged fate. 37 39 40

Her lack of an identity mark leads to her detention by the Black Armor Guards. Chen Cheng secretly orders that she be released, but Chen Zihang intervenes and takes her to Qing Xing Courtyard after recognizing her identity.
