Chen Ping walked a few more steps and spotted the target of this trip—the Touch Dragon King with Four Hundred Eighty Years of cultivation.
It was about one and a half meters long and as thick as an adult's forearm. Though it could not compare to the nearly three-meter-long Touch Dragon King outside, which was as thick as an adult's thigh, it was still an intimidating sight.
Leaving aside everything else, its two rows of centipede legs, like steel blades, and its great mandibles that seemed cast from wrought iron, were enough to make one shudder. Its mouthful of jagged teeth was even more nauseating to look at from a distance.
Chen Ping quietly set his bamboo basket on the ground, then touched the Storage Ring on his left hand, which held only a fingernail-sized sapphire fragment.
This had been part of Chen Ping's preparations from the beginning.
His First Soul Ring did not need him to hunt especially powerful soul beasts.
And most soul beasts had a common weakness when they reached the Hundred Year Level.
That weakness was fire.
Although setting a fire inside a Mountain Cave was admittedly a rather stupid idea, Chen Ping was certain that his mediocre Kung Fu alone could never take down this Touch Dragon King.
He was not Superman. He could not spend a month or two training with the system, learn a few moves, then take a Willow Staff and risk his life against a Touch Dragon King.
He poured out the water from his canteen and soaked the coarse linen towel he used to wipe sweat from his neck. Using both hands, Chen Ping swiftly wrapped it around his face, covering his nose and mouth.
Chen Ping carefully removed a palm-sized clay jar from his Storage Ring, while his other hand took out a tinderbox from his basket.
Chen Ping took several deep breaths, rubbed off the tinderbox cap with one hand, and gently flicked his wrist. The spark on the tinderbox immediately grew much brighter.
The mouth of the palm-sized clay jar in Chen Ping's right hand was plugged with a wad of coarse linen soaked in grease. A faint sloshing sound came from within when he shook it. This was a hand-made Incendiary Bomb crafted using an ancient method.
Of course, Chen Ping wanted to throw grenades directly. Failing that, he would settle for an AK or a rifle—grow bigger and stronger, then create new glory.
But the problem was, he could not make them.
Tang San could bring Hidden Weapons to Douluo Continent, but that did not mean Chen Ping could mix one part saltpeter, two parts sulfur, and three parts charcoal, add some sugar, and make a Tsar Bomba.
Perhaps the Douluo world simply did not have gunpowder. Or perhaps it did, but Chen Ping's formula was wrong.
Even if Chen Ping managed to create black powder from Blue Star, it would not be true black powder.
Both the system's deductions and Chen Ping's experiments had coldly proven this point.
The rules of the two worlds were indeed subtly different.
As for how Tang San's Wrath of the Buddha Tang Lotus exploded and what its formula was, Chen Ping's system really could look that up.
But retrieving information from more than ten thousand years ago in such detail came at an astronomical price that Chen Ping simply could not afford.
Fortunately, Chen Ping could at least make Incendiary Bombs, and according to his private tests, they worked remarkably well!
The tinderbox spark ignited the fuse cloth of the homemade Incendiary Bomb. Chen Ping accurately hurled it, smashing it toward the Touch Dragon King's back.
"Bang!"
The inherently brittle clay jar shattered the instant it struck the Touch Dragon King's hard carapace. The fire oil inside spilled freely, then was ignited by the fuse cloth.
"Hisssss—"
The Touch Dragon King immediately let out agonized hisses. No matter what, it was only a centipede. How many centipedes were not afraid of fire?
For a moment, flames scattered throughout the Mountain Cave as fire oil rolled everywhere. Fortunately, Touch Dragon soul beasts preferred damp places, and there was not much kindling in the cave. Chen Ping was not worried it would set the whole cave ablaze.
However, the Touch Dragon King before him was clearly more fire-resistant than Chen Ping had expected. The crude Incendiary Bomb burned for more than a minute before slowly going out.
Yet during that time, apart from writhing in pain and smashing about wildly, sending dirt flying and cracking rocks, the Touch Dragon King showed no signs of dying.
Chen Ping felt a chill creep into his heart. Now he understood why civilian Soul Masters could only begin with a Ten Year Level First Soul Ring. A Hundred Year Soul Beast in ancient times was fucking monster!
Other than Bei Bei and Tang Ya outside, who were doing their best to kill the Millennium Touch Dragon King, Chen Ping had not seen any other Shrek Soul Masters.
But Chen Ping was certain that even among Shrek's so-called geniuses,
there were probably few who could kill a Hundred Year Level soul beast by their own strength and obtain their First Soul Ring.
Holding his breath, Chen Ping hid behind a stone wall, took out another homemade Incendiary Bomb, and threw it at the Touch Dragon King.
But even though Chen Ping had been careful enough, the sound of the bomb cutting through the air was still detected by the Touch Dragon King's exceptionally sensitive hearing.
"Hisss hisss hisss—"
The Touch Dragon King gave a sharp hiss, but because its compound eyes had extremely poor vision, it failed to realize that the sound rushing through the air meant another Incendiary Bomb.
Surging flames erupted across the Touch Dragon King once more as the flowing fire oil churned. The six scythe-like wings on its back flapped wildly, flinging fire oil everywhere.
Even Chen Ping nearly got hit himself, almost struck by the burning fire oil.
Chen Ping hurriedly tiptoed away to another spot. Watching the Touch Dragon King smash around like a headless fly and vent its pain, he had just breathed a slight sigh of relief when a rustling sound came from beneath his feet.
From the shadows, a huge Evil Pincer Bug burrowed out of the ground. It resembled a venomous scorpion somewhat, but its body was covered in jet-black hard armor.
Its enormous pincers looked capable of shredding gold and iron alike. Its tail did not end in a single venom hook, but split into two forked tails that gave off a faint dark-green sheen, as though they were saturated with deadly poison.
Wasn't this just perfect.
Chen Ping immediately shuddered.
Right. No matter how enraged the Thousand Year Level Touch Dragon King outside was, it would not leave a Little Touch Dragon King alone in the cave.
This Evil Pincer Bug before him was the guard left behind!
What should he do? What should he do?
Chen Ping's hands were trembling. This was truly his first time experiencing a situation where his life hung by a thread.
The Little Touch Dragon King and Evil Pincer Bug had trapped him between them, one in front and one behind.
Outside, there was also the Big Touch Dragon King, which could return at any moment, along with more than a dozen Touch Dragons at the Hundred Year Level or above.
This was the first time Chen Ping had felt death so close.
Mm.
Getting hit by a car to death in his previous life did not count. That had been negative-distance contact with death, not merely getting close.
Honestly, Chen Ping could not understand why this Touch Dragon King was so resistant to fire!
If he remembered correctly, while a Touch Dragon King's carapace had good resistance to sharp attacks and all kinds of elemental attacks, that only applied to its shell.
With all the fire oil that had spilled everywhere just now, its soft underbelly should have been burned through long ago.
Chen Ping did not know that he had overlooked one thing.
The temperatures on Douluo Continent and Blue Star might simply be entirely different.
After all, flames only reached two or three thousand degrees here when they counted as Ultimate Fire!
