Background

Dante operated the Devil May Cry office as a demon-hunting mercenary. Though renowned as the strongest Devil May Cry, he was habitually lazy, slept at work, delayed accepting jobs until money was scarce, and charged fees commensurate with his strength. His preferred weapon was the greatsword Rebellion. 24

The Order of the Sword originally intended to capture Dante, then the only known living Sparda descendant, as the core for its Savior project. Its leaders considered him exceptionally dangerous because of his combat ability and collection of Demonic Tools. 20 22

Trish contacted Dante after discovering that the Order had acquired Sparda’s Blade and was targeting a young woman with Sparda’s bloodline: Nero. Dante immediately departed for Fortuna to intervene. 24

After Nero defeated the Order’s forces, Dante returned Yamato to her, judging her strength and resolve sufficient to wield it. He later recognized her as family and came to regard her as his niece. 28 29

Appearance

Dante is generally recognized by his silver hair and carries himself with an intentionally casual, showy confidence. His later demonic transformations give him wings and greatly amplify his physical and magical power. 29 437

  • Usually carries the greatsword Rebellion. 24
  • Uses the paired handguns Ebony and Ivory. 162
  • Is associated with a red outfit upon returning to Devil May Cry. 484
  • Can assume Devil Trigger and True Demon forms. 391 435

Personality

Dante is flippant, provocative, and often vulgar even in life-threatening situations. He enjoys taunting enemies, fighting with style, sweets such as strawberry sundaes, pizza, and showing off in combat. 2 24 405 486

Beneath this carefree exterior, he is perceptive and protective. He reacted urgently to the Order’s plan to exploit Nero, approved of her right to wield Yamato, and repeatedly trained or fought beside her as an equal rather than treating her as helpless. 24 28 117 118

His view of power centers on heart, will, love, and conscience rather than raw demonic strength. This conviction places him in direct ideological opposition to Mundus and Vergil. 141 393 396

Abilities & Skills

Demonic Power and Transformation

Dante possesses immense demonic power as Sparda’s descendant and can awaken or channel that power under extreme resolve.

  • Entered demon form while challenging Mundus without the Sword of Sparda. 131 133
  • Used Devil Trigger against the Son of Mundus, while struggling to maintain control over the transformation. 391
  • Can assume a True Demon form when forced into a high-level clash. 435
  • His dormant power responds strongly to resolve, particularly when protecting those depending on him. 133

Swordsmanship

Dante is an exceptionally adaptable swordsman whose primary weapon is Rebellion.

  • Uses Rebellion for direct combat, high-speed thrusts, demonic energy slashes, and attacks against large enemies. 24 141 391
  • Can change his greatsword into alternate forms, including a battle axe. 389 405
  • Received a transformed form of Rebellion through contact with the sealed Sparda statue. 361
  • Absorbed both of his swords through a secret technique to gain additional power against the Mundus Unified Body. 475

Fire and Close-Quarters Combat

Dante combines hand-to-hand techniques with flame-based Demonic Tools.

  • Uses Ifrit gauntlets and flame-propelled combat techniques. 118 121
  • Demonstrated how flames can propel movement, reinforce strikes, and be intensified through technique. 121
  • Fought Nero’s magic swords and Yamato techniques with both martial skill and rapid adaptation. 119

Firearms

Dante employs the twin pistols Ebony and Ivory against demons.

  • Used Ebony and Ivory to destroy Asmodeus. 162
  • Can summon his guns alongside Rebellion in combat. 345
  • Recognizes when firearms are ineffective, such as against the Black Knight’s armor. 370

  • Anchors himself to terrain or enemies to perform aerial maneuvers. 389
  • Restrained the Blazing Warhorse with a crimson demonic chain and Snake Kiss. 373

Tactical Judgment

Although he often relies on overwhelming force, Dante is capable of careful battlefield analysis.

  • Identified Little Ace as a greater danger than the ancient demon Nanna because of its ability to deceive and exploit human weaknesses. 117
  • Deduced that Mundus’s seemingly invincible body was constrained by Nanna’s projection ability. 155
  • Worked with Nero to coordinate attacks, exploit enemy weaknesses, and counter Limbo’s changing terrain. 351 352 370 373
