Background / History

Voldemort first operates at Hogwarts by parasitically possessing Professor Quirrell. While inhabiting Quirrell, he confronts Dylan in the Forbidden Forest and later seeks the Philosopher's Stone through the Mirror of Erised. Dumbledore restrains Quirrell, forcing Voldemort to abandon his host as black smoke and flee 87 98 100.

His soul-splitting methods leave separate manifestations behind. A younger Tom Riddle appears in the Chamber of Secrets and controls Ginny Weasley until Dylan intervenes, defeats the Basilisk, and leaves Riddle confused and disoriented. Dylan later experiments on the soul fragment within Ravenclaw's Diadem, splitting it and transferring its remaining fragments into a cockroach before destroying the Diadem as a Horcrux 154 281.

After recovering enough strength to act openly, Voldemort uses Peter Pettigrew while preparing a resurrection ritual. He recruits Dark Wizards through his remaining followers and treats Durmstrang as a useful stronghold, where Barty Crouch Jr. teaches Dark Magic in his service 317 334.

Voldemort publicly returns by activating Dark Marks across the world. He uses marked Death Eaters as magical conduits to project his image, spread panic, expose former followers, and announce a “new era” for wizards. He also offers amnesty to past traitors in an effort to rebuild his support base 436 437 438.

His return culminates in duels with Dumbledore at Heroes' Square and Azkaban. After breaking into Azkaban and freeing imprisoned Death Eaters, he is overwhelmed by Dumbledore and Dylan. His physical body is destroyed, and he possesses Antonin Dolohov to evade capture; when Dylan's magic binds his soul, Voldemort kills Dolohov and escapes as black smoke 444 448 451 452.

Later, Voldemort establishes himself at Durmstrang in a new form, interrogates Severus Snape over his loyalty, executes Igor Karkaroff, and orders Snape to investigate Dylan Hawkwood's unexplained power 466 468.

Voldemort alternates between a deliberately terrifying Dark Lord image and his original Tom Riddle appearance.

He is also proud and highly sensitive to humiliation. Dylan's mockery repeatedly provokes him into anger, especially when Dylan compares him unfavorably to the hidden Dark Lord Karthus or challenges his image as an invincible master of Dark Magic 87 435 437.

Despite his cruelty, Voldemort is capable of long-term strategic thought. He studies Grindelwald's ideas, seeks alliances with Pure-blood families, uses the Dark Mark as a worldwide communications network, and adopts conciliatory rhetoric to attract both former followers and ordinary wizards 378 437 438.
