History
Odin ruled Asgard and claimed authority over the Nine Realms, though he acknowledged opposition both within Asgard and across the other realms. He feared the prophesied Ragnarok and sought ways to strengthen his kingdom before it arrived 139 156.
Asgard entered a covenant of mutual non-betrayal with the Sorcerer Supreme's lineage and Luke's Hebron 171. Luke, Odin, and the Ancient One later turned the threat of Mangog into an energy source: an Energy Lake near the palace increased the activity and density of Asgard's energy, strengthening its land and inhabitants 176 177.
During the War of the Realms, a Dark Elf attack damaged Asgard's Bifrost. Without its rapid transport and offensive capability, Asgard lost its deployment advantage and struggled to defend territory across the Nine Realms 204 209. Odin obtained a High-Dimensional Space Core device from Luke to restore it, while Asgard sought equipment and other support from its allies 210 220 223. The war ended in Asgard's favor with relatively few Asgardian losses, although the destruction and mutation of Nidavellir weakened Yggdrasil's energy cycle 230.
Odin later abdicated and handed over the divine power and authorities attached to Asgard's throne 319. In a subsequent effort to reinforce the realm, Asgard prepared its earth veins for a fragment of the Star Soul Azeroth. Thor opened a path into the planet core, where Odin, Frigga, and Karnilla placed the Star Soul. New energy spread through the land, after which Asgard's mages began reinforcing its barriers 359 360.
Realm Features
- Bifrost — Asgard's signature transport system can deploy warriors across great distances. At increased output, it can also serve as a long-range weapon, though Odin avoids destructive use that would damage the Nine Realms' energy cycle 157 222 229.
- Energy Lake — Created near the Asgardian Palace from the Mangog operation. Its energy stabilizes the land and strengthens Asgardian physiques 176 177.
- Star Soul energy — After the Star Soul was placed in Asgard's core, energy flowed through the land and rose from the lake. Its Arcane energy also made stronger barriers necessary to deter intruders and conceal its energy fluctuations 359 360.
- Odin's Vault — Holds treasures and equipment acquired through Odin's past victories 209 220.
Relationships
- Midgard — Asgard aided its defense against Loki's invasion and later sought Midgardian support against the Dark Elves. Thor negotiated military assistance in exchange for resource-mining rights elsewhere in the Nine Realms 157 208 209.
- Hebron and the Sorcerer Supreme's lineage — Covenant allies. Luke supplied technology and wartime aid, while the Ancient One helped resolve the Mangog threat 171 177 210 223.
- The Dwarves — Longtime partners who forged equipment under Odin's protection. After Nidavellir became uninhabitable, some resettled in Asgard, while others moved to Luke's Silent City 230 425.
- The Dark Elf alliance — Wartime enemies whose attack damaged the Bifrost; Asgard ultimately defeated their allied army 204 230.
