Background / History

Brother Yu was the third player to enter Spirit Candle. His player ID, Fisherman Who Never Misses a Catch, reflects his overriding interest in fishing; as the oldest player in real life among the early group, the others began calling him Brother Yu. He had adapted competently to the game’s controls by the time Li Miao met him, though fishing remained his chief priority. 10

His fixation was apparent from the beginning. When Guagua Sis hooked a huge fish shortly after casting her line while he had caught nothing, Brother Yu was devastated by the perceived unfairness. When the fish nearly escaped, he immediately dove in and carried it ashore himself. 16 He continued bringing a Fishing Rod even while dressed for combat, and he consistently sought new offshore bait and larger catches. 83 139

At some point, Brother Yu undertook revenge for his master and killed the Giant-tailed Sea Monster, receiving a mysterious pearl. He regarded the revenge as fulfilled and was left content by the result. 55

Brother Yu later killed the Salary Seizer, earning the Silver title Harvester Pioneer as the first player to achieve this feat. Despite the rare rewards and public recognition, he remained disappointed that the loot did not include wax oil and quickly returned his attention to fishing. 153

Appearance

Brother Yu’s equipment changes frequently, but he is notably associated with carrying a Fishing Rod even during dangerous expeditions. 83 302

  • Wore a Law Knight Set without its helmet during the Isle of Exile expedition. 83
  • Later equipped Tidal Armor (Collector’s) and Tidal Leggings (Excellent)—both accidentally fished from the sea. 302
  • Carries a bow for situations where melee combat is unsuitable. 302
  • Uses the black Deathflame Sword, formerly called the Sealed Black Sword or “Little Black.” 403 915
  • Can enter the Deathflame Swordsman form and cloak himself in the Deathflame Sword’s burial shroud. 791 934

Personality

Brother Yu is single-minded about fishing, often treating it as more important than combat rewards, major quests, or the weapon capable of granting him immense power. The prospect of ancient fishing tools and techniques immediately won his full commitment to the Journey of Unsealing, whereas promises of combat power and lost history did not. 403

He is also pragmatic and patient in combat. He studies enemies, exploits terrain and timing, and is willing to retreat when a battle is unfavorable rather than fight pointlessly. His approach to Leti, the Carrier of Great Feathers Helmsman, and the Extinguish faction consistently combines restraint, bargaining, and decisive force. 319 331 893

Despite his dry humor and tendency to threaten people with a sword while acting polite, Brother Yu is compassionate toward the dead. His respect for graves helped him expose the ancient giant worm’s deception in Regretless Cemetery, and he returned to the Burial Spirit Flower Sea specifically to help its trapped souls find rest. 320 906 1000

Abilities & Skills

Fishing

Brother Yu is an obsessive and highly successful fisherman whose catches can provide both equipment and rare resources.

  • Unlocks encyclopedia entries and gains wax oil from fish he catches. 114
  • Fished up both pieces of his Tidal Armor set and the original Sealed Black Sword. 302 403
  • Caught an epic-quality Golden Velvet Treasure-Spitting Fish, then exchanged it for points at Laman’s shop. 393
  • Uses fishing knowledge and bait even while exploring dangerous regions. 139 496

Law Offering Blade and Fatal Insight

Before obtaining Death Fire, Brother Yu’s build emphasized Agility, melee combat, and identifying openings.

  • Fatal Insight greatly improves his perception of enemy weaknesses while active. 302
  • Can consume all Fire Offering Power to substantially strengthen his next attack against an unbalanced or weakened enemy. 302
  • Tear Pierce and Law Offering Instinct improved his danger perception, dodging, and resistance. 302
  • His Fire Offering was considered effective against high-defense opponents, functioning as a counter to tank-oriented builds. 372

Deathflame Swordsman

Grave Soil altered Brother Yu’s Warfire and enabled him to wield forbidden Death Fire through the Deathflame Sword. 791

  • Body Fused with Death Fire retains weakness perception and danger sensing while reducing the effects of abnormal statuses. 791
  • In Tinder Form, he can fuse his body with Death Fire. 791
  • Death Fire allows him to resist suppression from the Extinguish trait. 893
  • His Dead Fire can annihilate surface-level corruption and carve through major defenses. 900
  • The power was initially limited: using it repeatedly risked driving his Warfire toward death, and the sword required flame fuel to replenish usable Death Fire. 792 795

Burial Shroud

After the Deathflame Sword fully unsealed, its assimilated burial shroud became part of Brother Yu’s Deathflame Swordsman form. 915 916

  • Extends the range of the Power of Death Fire. 916
  • Improves the duration and efficiency of Dead Fire use in Deathflame Swordsman form. 916
  • Protects him from dangerous influences such as the Flame of Ignorance and the compulsive pull of the Forgotten Corridor. 934 997

Tactical Combat

Brother Yu relies on mobility, opportunism, and battlefield awareness rather than straightforward exchanges.

  • Used Feathered Patrol attacks against the Seagull Saint by making the immobilized leader act as a shield. 310
  • Waited for the right moment to kill the Carrier of Great Feathers Helmsman rather than attacking immediately. 331
  • Captured and interrogated Leti instead of accepting his attempted bargain at face value. 319 320
  • Used the Evil Relic Misty Shrine to create a Corpse Black Mist Tide and impede pursuers at sea. 894
  • Exposed the false “Great Death Fire” by performing the burial ritual correctly and drawing Dead Fire through a Burial Spirit Flower. 998 999

  • Tidal Armor (Collector’s) and Tidal Leggings (Excellent) — Heavy equipment he fished up by mistake. 302

  • Helmsman’s Vertebra — A collection item acquired from the Great Feather Transporter; can control the transporter. 332
  • Transporter’s Manual — Recovered alongside the Helmsman’s Vertebra. 332

  • Brother Aotian — An old acquaintance who joined two other Prison Players in rescuing Brother Yu from his pursuers. 894
