Background / History

Poison cultivation and the herb garden

Dugu Bo cultivated poisonous arts throughout his life, but his own Martial Soul’s toxins tormented him for forty years. He maintained a herb garden at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well in Sunset Forest, surrounding its approaches with poison mist dangerous enough to deter even some Titled Douluo 40 41 42.

His expertise did not make him immune to the garden’s hazards. When he first claimed it as a Rank 89 Soul Douluo, touching an unfamiliar herb nearly killed him. The Ye Family’s Begonia healing helped save his life, establishing an important connection between his poison cultivation and their medical abilities 41.

Meeting Ji Wuming and curing the Dugu Family

At the Ye Family Medical Hall, Dugu Bo expelled the venom erupting inside Dugu Yan, then pinned Ji Wuming to the floor with Soul Pressure and questioned him. Ji Wuming’s knowledge of inherited Martial Soul Poison persuaded him to bring the youth to his garden, promising one request if he could cure grandfather and granddaughter 40.

Dugu Bo initially implanted his cultivation-condensed Pill Orb inside Ji Wuming as insurance against deception. Ji Wuming identified the Earth Dragon Golden Melon and proposed concentrating Dugu Bo’s toxins into the orb before taking it, preserving his poison arts rather than simply removing them 41.

The treatment transformed his serpent Martial Soul into the Ink Domain Poison Dragon and freed his body from its poisonous backlash. In gratitude, he allowed Ji Wuming to harvest herbs and gave him a living-storage Soul Tool. He subsequently offered to take Ji Wuming as his first disciple, but accepted his refusal after hearing that he already had a master 41 42 43.

Soul-ring hunts and the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan

Dugu Bo escorted Ji Wuming and Dugu Yan into Thunderbolt Canyon for their next Soul Rings. He captured an Earth Dragon Python for his granddaughter and subdued a nearly 20,000-year-old Thunderous Hell Vine for Ji Wuming. His hesitation over the vine concerned Dugu Yan’s safety, not his ability to defeat it 46 47 48.

After Ji Wuming wounded Yu Tianheng, Dugu Bo protected him from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s disciples. He killed two men who threatened or defied him, then expelled the Blood Rust Poison from Yu Tianheng and dressed his wound 53.

Yu Yuanzhen later demanded that Dugu Bo join his clan. Dugu Bo refused and defeated him in a wagered duel using his evolved dragon Martial Soul and poison. The victory was costly: he withdrew with serious injuries and admitted that his new earth attribute had helped him survive the confrontation 58 59.

Protector and alliance elder

Dugu Bo treated the injuries caused by Ji Wuming and Dugu Yan’s Lightning Induction training and helped obtain Dugu Yan’s fourth Soul Ring. He also recognized the limits of his own instruction, supporting Ji Wuming’s decision to seek guidance from a spear specialist 57 58 66.

His protection became a foundation for Ji Wuming’s alliances. He approved the proposed sect, exchanged poison knowledge with Yang Wudi, and received the Blue Silver Emperor for planting in his herb garden. During a beast tide in the Star Dou Great Forest, he quickly assessed the danger and helped lead the group to safety 101 115 122.

When Tang Hao attacked Ji Wuming, Dugu Bo intervened and pursued him outside Heaven Dou City. Their battle injured both men, but Dugu Bo’s poison forced Tang Hao to retreat. Ye Wuyi subsequently healed Dugu Bo, after which his Soul Power rose another level 144 145 146.

He later forcibly acquired Bai He’s Crystal Blood Dragon Ginseng while offering 100,000 Gold Soul Coins. Although he wanted Ji Wuming to use the rare treasure, the youth insisted that Dugu Bo consume it; he subsequently reached Level 97. Before the younger generation’s planned Sea God Island trials, Ji Wuming entrusted the allied families’ protection to him 174 175 176 177.

Appearance

  • Hair: Originally green; turns dark brownish-black after his Martial Soul evolution 42.
  • Eyes: Green 54.
  • Clothing: Wears green clothing during the Thunderbolt Canyon expedition 46.
  • Rejuvenation: Appears more than twenty years younger after the Earth Dragon Golden Melon removes his poison torment 42.

Personality

Dugu Bo is solitary, suspicious, and blunt. He initially uses threats and coercion to test Ji Wuming, including the Pill Orb safeguard. His temper can turn lethal when someone threatens Dugu Yan, but he also acknowledges debts: despite regretting Ji Wuming’s extensive harvesting, he refuses to reclaim gifts and break his word 40 41 45 53.

His affection for Dugu Yan drives both his protectiveness and his matchmaking. He encourages her relationship with Ji Wuming while remaining jealous of the attention she gives him. As his trust grows, he treats Ji Wuming as a grandson, tends his injuries, and repeatedly tries to keep him within reach of his protection 53 54 57 58 168.

He values independence and dislikes owing favors, rejecting Yu Yuanzhen’s offer of future assistance even while accepting the duel’s wager. His confidence does not entirely obscure his judgment: after winning, he privately acknowledges how badly Yu Yuanzhen injured him 59.
