Background

Katsuki and his elder sister, Kushina, survived the fall of Uzushiogakure after the Land of Water conquered the Land of Whirlpools and Mist Ninja breached their clan's village. The loss of the wider Uzumaki Clan left him acutely aware that the clan was nearing extinction. 139

As a child, he trained to an extreme degree under the brutal traditions of the Uzumaki Clan, regularly pushing himself to collapse through endurance drills, strength exercises, and striking practice. The Human-Human Fruit initially disappointed him, but an earlier encounter with Mist Ninja convinced him that it had substantial potential. 11
