Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mangekyō Sharingan awakening | 272 | A retrospective explanation identifies Rin’s death as the trigger. Obito’s right eye and his left eye, already held by Kakashi, evolved simultaneously. |
| Hashirama-cell-enhanced Mangekyō Sharingan | 2 | Already established before his first on-page appearance. The transplanted cells remove the danger of Mangekyō-related blindness, allowing unrestricted use. |
| Substantial improvement in combat strength | 271 272 | His strength is explicitly described as having improved tremendously over the years. He subsequently holds his own against Kakashi and Number One Spore Clone, both Kage-level opponents. No new ocular evolution is documented. |
Appearance
- Spiral mask: Conceals his identity and ordinarily leaves only his right eye exposed 45 78.
- Red-cloud black robe: Worn during his Akatsuki activities and confrontations with Konoha ninja 61 206 207.
- Bandaged hand: Visible while he considers Fugaku’s bloodline-acquisition ability 206.
- Scarred face: Half his face is covered in severe scars, revealed when Kakashi breaks his mask 334.
- Sacrificed left eye: After surviving Fugaku’s illusion through Izanagi, he reveals a completely white left eye beneath the mask 214.
Personality
Obito’s revenge centers on Rin. He holds Kirigakure responsible for driving her to her death and uses the Fourth Mizukage to impose Bloody Mist policies. He takes pleasure in casualties on both sides of the Kirigakure–Kaguya conflict because both are targets of his vengeance. His feelings toward Kakashi combine nostalgia with hatred: he acknowledges that Kakashi had no choice when Rin died, but refuses to forgive his failure to protect her 45 90.
His confidence rests heavily on Kamui. He dismisses a fifty-million-ryō bounty and Konoha’s twelve-man extermination squad because he believes encirclement cannot prevent his escape. That confidence becomes panic when Fugaku forces him toward Phasing’s time limit. Afterward, Obito admits that he underestimated Fugaku and waits for his absence before attempting to reclaim Kakashi’s eye 45 59 209 214 271.
Obito changes his manner to suit his disguise. As “Madara,” he adopts an aged, authoritative voice and uses stories learned from the real Madara to support his claims. As Tobi, he acts erratically and flatters Deidara. Neither persona prevents him from killing former clansmen or exploiting civilians when necessary 46 47 211 287.
Abilities & Skills
Kamui
His Mangekyō Sharingan’s space-time ability provides both Phasing and transportation through a vortex 35 249.
- Phasing: Shifts his body into another dimension, allowing weapons and ninjutsu to pass through him 35 61.
- Transportation: Used to infiltrate Konoha, bypass prison restrictions, extract Nagato, and abduct Sora 45 249 320 322.
- Counter to Kotoamatsukami: Shifting into the phased state interrupts Shisui’s influence, including an activation that initially reaches his mind 35 46.
- Five-minute limit: Continuous Phasing cannot exceed five minutes; persistent attacks can prevent him from safely deactivating it 209 214.
- Tangible attack window: He must become solid when attacking or drawing an enemy into his dimension 62 208.
- Known counters: The Yata Mirror nullifies Phasing on contact. Fugaku’s True Illusion traps him despite Kamui, while Sasuke and Kakashi exploit Phasing’s expiration in their final battle 210 272 334.
Mangekyō Sharingan and Genjutsu
His eyes provide powerful perception, illusion-casting, and the ability to attempt to dispel genjutsu 78 210.
- Places the Fourth Mizukage under genjutsu and governs Kirigakure through him 45.
- Hypnotizes Fugaku’s surveillance Spore Clone without destroying it, preventing an advance warning of his attack on Kakashi’s team 325.
- Magnifies small traces during his investigation of an impersonator, though he finds no usable trail 78.
- Cannot break Fugaku’s True Illusion, even after drawing fully on his Mangekyō’s ocular power 210 214.
Wood Release
Hashirama-cell transplantation gives Obito access to Wood Release despite his Uchiha ancestry 36.
- Cutting Sprig: Produces sharp branches that pierce victims and grow offshoots throughout their bodies 35 47 61.
- Chaos of Hell: Used after Konoha’s extermination squad discovers that he must become tangible to attack 62.
- Counterplay: Shisui saves an injured ninja by severing a branch before its internal growth can finish 61.
Izanagi
Obito uses a Sharingan implanted in his left eye to overturn fatal injuries 214 272.
- An automatically activating Izanagi revives him after Fugaku kills him inside True Illusion 209 214.
- A later activation removes both Amaterasu’s flames and the wound inflicted by Kakashi’s Raikiri 272.
- Use renders the sacrificed eye white and unusable; the technique’s active duration is also finite 214 272.
- During his final battle, Sasuke and Kakashi maintain pressure until Izanagi expires and prevent his escape 334.
Hashirama Cells and Vitality
His implanted Hashirama cells prevent Mangekyō-related blindness and grant formidable vitality 2 334.
- Allow repeated Mangekyō use without the eyesight deterioration suffered by Shisui 2 46 47.
- Do not save him from the combined lightning wounds inflicted by Sasuke and Kakashi 334.
Combat Knowledge and Spatial Talent
Obito inherits Madara’s teachings and possesses knowledge of secret and forbidden techniques, including the Eight Gates’ characteristics, although he has not practiced that technique himself 59 208.
- Combines Phasing with close-range branch attacks and chain restraints 61 208.
- Recognizes the danger of unfamiliar Mangekyō abilities and initially withdraws from Shisui to investigate them 35.
- Possesses Space Talent, later acquired by Fugaku through Corpse Melting and used alongside Madara’s talent to develop Space Banishment 336 373.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spiral mask — conceals his face until Kakashi destroys it with Purple Electricity 334.
- Akatsuki robe — red-cloud black clothing worn during missions and confrontations 61 207.
- Iron chain — used to attempt to restrain Fugaku immediately after becoming tangible 208.
- Implanted left-eye Sharingan — serves as the eye sacrificed for Izanagi 214 272.
History
Hidden Leadership and Kakuzu’s Death
Obito is introduced as an Uchiha who should have died long ago, not as a literal spirit. Behind the identity of “Uchiha Madara,” he directs Akatsuki while Nagato serves as its public leader. Following Kakuzu’s death, he suspects Fugaku may have awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and orders a thorough investigation. He also instructs Zetsu to keep Nagato under constant surveillance 30.
Konoha’s investigation of a destroyed Root squad threatens to expose Akatsuki’s base. Obito kills a four-man investigation squad to divert attention, deliberately allowing a distress signal to summon reinforcements. Shisui arrives, and Obito withdraws after encountering his Mangekyō and Kotoamatsukami 35.
Revenge in Kirigakure and Shisui’s Recruitment
Obito places the Fourth Mizukage under genjutsu and introduces Bloody Mist policies as revenge for Rin. He later orchestrates conflict between Kirigakure and the Kaguya Clan, welcoming the deaths of both groups 45 90.
After Konoha blames him for Uchiha Sen’s murder and posts a fifty-million-ryō bounty, he examines Sen’s corpse and recognizes Cutting Sprig wounds. He concludes that someone with access to Hashirama cells has framed him. During the same visit, he approaches Shisui as “Madara” and offers a remedy for Mangekyō-related blindness in exchange for joining his organization. Shisui refuses; the resulting battle exposes Shisui’s Susanoo, kills four Uchiha clansmen, and ends with Obito’s retreat 45 46 47.
Konoha’s Hunt and the Impersonator
Further blame falls on Obito when Konoha’s Scroll of Seals is stolen. To protect Akatsuki’s hideout, he deliberately leaks his presence in the Land of Rivers and confronts a squad containing Shisui and eleven Elite Jōnin. He withstands their opening barrage through Phasing and kills members of the squad despite their discovery of his attack window 59 61 62.
Fugaku continues using Obito’s identity for covert killings. Obito investigates the deaths of Shimura Daisuke and his companions but fails to identify the culprit. Other atrocities attributed to the Wood Style Ninja are not his work: Root destroys Ishizuru Village, while Fugaku later pins the deaths of Konoha’s advisors on him 71 76 78 230.
Defeat by Fugaku
Zetsu’s report that Fugaku possesses Ice Release and Shikotsumyaku leads Obito to suspect a bloodline-acquisition dōjutsu. He connects that possibility to the Wood Release impersonator and travels to Konoha to confront Fugaku 206.
Fugaku’s True Illusion and Seventh Gate attacks overturn Obito’s assumptions about Kamui. Unable to break the illusion or safely reset Phasing, he is killed when its five-minute duration expires. Izanagi restores him, but Fugaku continues the pursuit. Obito finally escapes by throwing civilians toward Fugaku, forcing him to choose between attacking and saving them 207 209 210 211 214.
Reclaiming Kakashi’s Eye
Obito later frees Orochimaru from Konoha’s high-security prison with Kamui. Still posing as Madara, he presents himself as Akatsuki’s hidden controller 249.
When Fugaku leaves Konoha, Obito attempts to take his original left eye from Kakashi. Number One Spore Clone intervenes with Amaterasu, Susanoo, and the Yata Mirror. Obito survives through Izanagi and withdraws after a prolonged stalemate 271 272.
He renews the attempt in the Land of Tea after hypnotizing Fugaku’s surveillance clone. Obito quickly incapacitates Kakashi’s students and apparently kills Kakashi, only for Izanagi to undo the death. Sasuke’s sudden Mangekyō awakening enables the team to repel him, leaving the survivors badly injured 325 326.
Tailed Beast Operations and Death
Under the Tobi persona, Obito participates in Akatsuki’s renewed Tailed Beast Capture Plan and helps Nagato and Konan capture the Three-Tails 287 313. He extracts the mortally wounded Nagato through Kamui, but Fugaku’s subsequent curse attack kills Nagato. Black Zetsu uses Nagato’s body to revive the real Madara 320.
Obito then assists Madara by abducting Sora and helping obtain Minato’s reanimated body from Orochimaru for the Ten-Tails revival plan 322 324 327 328.
At Chiba Forest, Sasuke and Kakashi confront him together. They exhaust Izanagi, prevent his escape, and strike as Phasing ends. Kakashi’s Purple Electricity breaks the mask, revealing his former teammate. Obito collapses and dies; Kakashi later entrusts his corpse to Fugaku while asking that his identity remain concealed 330 334 335.
Posthumous Use of His Abilities
Fugaku removes and preserves Obito’s eyes, considering Number Two Spore Clone a suitable recipient for his Kamui-bearing Mangekyō. He then melts Obito’s and Madara’s corpses, acquiring their spatial talents. Their remains contribute to his Six Tomoe Rinnegan evolution and the development of Space Banishment 335 336 373.
