As mentioned before, the Yugi Mutou Research Project focused on developing the Deck archetypes used by Yugi Mutou's surface personality.

As everyone knew, in the main Duel Monsters series, ninety-nine percent of the First Generation Duel King's duels had basically been played by Atem on his behalf. Yugi himself had dueled relatively rarely, so the Deck archetypes Atem had used were naturally more numerous than Yugi's. Then, after Yugi became famous, he quickly retired, so the cards Atem had used naturally became better known.

On top of that, Seto Kaiba, the kingpin of card printing, was Atem's number-one fan. Over the years, he had invested even more heavily in developing Pharaoh-themed Decks led by Dark Magician, so Yugi's own Deck Development had been comparatively less popular.

However, Kira felt this was quite a good entry point. He took the lead in joining forces with KaibaCorp and Pegasus's Industrial Illusions to conduct in-depth development of the Decks used by Yugi Mutou.

The latest result he received upon returning was a series called Magician Girl.

This was a new Deck that had not yet existed in the main Duel Monsters series, first used by Yugi Mutou in the The Dark Side of Dimensions movie.

Strictly speaking, the Magician Girl Series was a derivative Deck of Dark Magician Girl, Yu-Gi-Oh!'s famous waifu, and shared the same archetype as her. Dark Magician Girl was also, in a sense, the earliest Monster in this Deck.
