The entire forest came alive in an instant. The rain hanging in the air became slanting silver streaks, birds that had been frozen in place suddenly beat their drenched wings, and one squirrel, still wearing a terrified expression, fell from a tree trunk into a puddle. The curtains of rain that had been frozen in midair now plummeted madly as though the world had been fast-forwarded, drilling countless fleeting little pits into the mud and raising white mist scented with fresh grass and rotting leaves.
Sounds long suppressed by Time Stop erupted at once. The patter of rain against broad leaves, the creak of branches bearing weight, and the muffled rumble of thunder surged in layered waves.
