Katsuya Jonouchi opened his heavy eyelids, awakened by a string of crisp, cheerful school bells ringing beside his ears.
He looked around and found himself in the classroom. There was no one else around. The desks and chairs were scattered haphazardly, and all kinds of books and stationery had been left in disarray on his classmates' desks.
"Class is over? Did everyone go eat without me?"
Joey Wheeler tilted his head back and let out a lazy yawn.
The scene before him quickly made him realize that he had probably fallen asleep during class again. His memory of when exactly he had arrived in the classroom was a little fuzzy, but it was no big deal. It was hardly the first or second time he had slept through class.
Joey stretched and stood up. When he turned around, he happened to see his good friends Honda and Anzu passing by the classroom window, chatting and laughing.
Joey hurried out of the classroom. "Seriously? You went to eat without taking me?"
The two stopped walking and turned back to look at Joey with strange expressions.
Joey froze. "What's wrong with you two?"
Anzu looked at him as though she were looking at wet garbage. "Joey, I'm saying this—you should really know when to stop."
Joey was baffled. "Stop what?"
"You keep pestering us every day, playing your little passionate friendship game as if you're so great," Anzu said. "You don't seriously think that makes us friends, do you?"
Joey stared blankly. "What are you talking about, Anzu? Why can't I understand any of this?"
"It means exactly what it says." Anzu spoke coldly, then turned to leave.
Honda spoke as well. "I feel the same way, Joey. I'm tired of that whole thing. You're starting to get annoying. That's all."
