Dumbledore saw Kayson gradually closing in on him and hurriedly added, "You could also supervise their progress in alchemy and have them devote themselves to learning how to make Wither Charms."
Kayson abruptly stopped. His eyes, which had been fixed on Dumbledore's old face, suddenly turned blank and round, and a question mark appeared over his head at some point.
"How did you know?"
Dumbledore smiled faintly. "There's nothing at Hogwarts that I don't know."
"..." Kayson awkwardly returned to his seat and sat back down. Hagrid, beside him, had not understood the interaction between Kayson and Dumbledore at all.
Fudge, however, understood it. He found Kayson even more unsettling.
That motion of rubbing his hands together and waving his palm just now had looked like he was about to slap Dumbledore across the face.
Yet Dumbledore had raised no objection. Instead, he had immediately begun explaining himself.
This was unbelievable!
Either this Kayson was incredibly powerful in battle, strong enough to pin Dumbledore down and beat him.
Physically, that was certainly possible, but magically, it seemed unlikely.
Then there was only the other possibility: Kayson was vitally important to Hogwarts—important enough that Dumbledore had to avoid provoking him, avoid clashing with him, and sometimes even explain himself and apologize.
Hiss...
Fudge quietly drew in a long, cold breath.
Terrifying indeed.
Kayson and the other two did not have nearly so much inner drama. They simply strolled out of Fudge's office and found Scrimgeour in the Auror Office.
"How have you been lately, Scrimgeour?" Dumbledore asked as he led Kayson and Hagrid into Scrimgeour's office.
"Not well. What is it?" Scrimgeour looked as though he had not rested properly either. The dark circles beneath his eyes were startling at first glance.
