Ambush

A pool of dark brown grease appeared at the cemetery entrance. Seconds later, a group of ghastly white skeletons shuffled out through the bluish-gray cemetery gate. The leading skeleton stepped onto the grease, its bones trembling, but it luckily kept its balance—until it stepped on a remaining Bear Trap.

Its leg bone snapped, and the skeleton could no longer keep its balance, toppling to the ground. The impact caused the skeletons struggling to balance behind it to fall as well. However, by the time six skeletons had been knocked down by the chain reaction, the ones behind them could already step over their companions' remains and continue forward.

But the Skeleton Warriors were greeted only by three gleaming missiles formed from magical force.

"Magic Missile!"

Swift force energy flew from Du Pont's slender fingertips. The Magic Missiles collided fiercely with the necromantic aura around the skeletons, but what Du Pont had not expected was that their quality varied wildly. Some merely had their necromantic aura weakened considerably, while one skeleton was blasted directly into a pile of shattered bones.

This quality...

Even the Skeleton Warriors summoned by Du Pont's first-circle necromantic servant summon would not be this frail. There was only one answer.

These were undead servants summoned autonomously by the Necromantic Circle. The caster maintaining the circle had likely already left.

With that thought, Du Pont immediately cast Shield Spell. The next second, three Magic Missiles shot toward him, only to vanish completely upon touching the eggshell-like barrier around him.

The ambush had failed. A startled voice came from within the cemetery, and at that moment, arcane radiance flashed across Du Pont's hand again. The chant for Shield Spell also rang out from the cemetery passage, but to his surprise, the three Magic Missiles did not fly toward him.
