Cloud Province includes the bustling Chongde Prefecture City, remote frontier settlements such as Gaoye City, mountain passes, waterways, wilderness, and major cultivation territories controlled by sects and clans. Chongde Prefecture City is protected by ancient stone walls and serves as the province’s political, commercial, and martial center. 140

Political Structure

Six Great Powers

Cloud Province’s public order was chiefly controlled by two great families and the Four Great Sects. Each possessed enough strength to overwhelm a frontier city such as Gaoye City. 121

Martial Hierarchy

Cloud Province’s martial factions maintain private armies, cultivate independent martial inheritances, and control regional resources. The Imperial Court viewed this autonomy as a direct challenge to central authority. 215 268

The province has no native Yin-Yang Grandmaster, a weakness that left its leading powers vulnerable to the Imperial Court’s Weapon Masters. 233 241

Yunzhou Martial Gathering

The triennial Yunzhou Martial Gathering was publicly presented as a contest among younger martial artists, but it also determined the redistribution of mines, medicinal valleys, trade routes, military resources, martial posts, and cultivation inheritances. 234 263

As the Imperial Court’s threat became imminent, the gathering also became a public declaration that Cloud Province’s martial factions would resist central control. Its strongest young participant was expected to become a future defender of the province. 248

Wang Yuan won the gathering undefeated after defeating Cloud Province’s five leading young prodigies, establishing himself as the province’s foremost young martial artist. His victory elevated Kaoshan Sect from the weakest of the Four Great Sects to a leading provincial power. 260 263

Conflict with the Great Yin Imperial Court

Imperial Campaign

After suppressing rebellion in Ji Province, Weapon Master Xiao Jin received an imperial decree ordering him to bring Cloud Province’s Four Great Sects and two great lineages under court control. The Imperial Court accused these powers of maintaining private armies, ignoring decrees, and functioning as independent regional authorities. 268

Xiao Jin marched into Cloud Province with thirty thousand veteran Northern Frontier cavalry. His army was tasked with purging private armies, autonomous clans, and self-governing martial sects; even factions that sought submission were reportedly massacred. 279 287

Yunzhou Defense Alliance

Facing Xiao Jin’s advance, the Cao and Li Families and the Four Great Sects formed the Yunzhou Defense Alliance at Yunmiao Mountain. The alliance assigned distinct military responsibilities to each member, but longstanding rivalry, resource disputes, and mutual distrust weakened its unity from the outset. 287 288

At Crossridge Pass, the alliance assembled roughly one hundred thousand troops against Xiao Jin’s thirty thousand cavalry. Although it held superior numbers and fortified terrain, its forces included poorly coordinated private soldiers, rogue cultivators, outlaws, and other unreliable units. 294

Battle of Cross Ridge

Xiao Jin’s cavalry shattered the alliance’s defensive lines and routed its army. More than ten thousand troops died in battle, while the larger force’s formations, morale, and command structure collapsed during the retreat. 297 298

The six major powers scattered in different directions after the defeat. Wang Yuan concluded that Xiao Jin had deliberately broken the alliance rather than annihilate it outright, intending to eliminate the fragmented factions one by one. 297 298
